Good call. Life on Mars was pretty cool. But Spooks always strikes me as a less cool, less action packed, less interesting version of 24.

It blatently is an attempt at a British 24..

You know I thought 'Spooks' was older than '24' but I just checked on IMdB and the first series of '24' was 2001, 'Spooks' was 2002. I'm not sure of a great similarity, though I admit I stopped watching 'Spooks' after everyone had died in the second Season. '24' is a great concept, but it somehow needs a suspension of belief that Jack can have such a full life.

I think the title "spooks" now refers to the vast number of ghosts that hang around the MI:5 offices complaining about being killed off just for shock value...

Well unless it's really bad and brings sci-fi into disrepute at the same time...

My biggest problem with Torchwood is that Jack is supposed to be a friend of the Doctor, and yet he's working for Torchwood? The organisation that was set up to ensure the Doctor stayed away and to fight any and all aliens that come to our planet?
Seems like aconflict of interest to me.

Also, I just can't see the thing between Owen and Gwen. It doesn't fit for me. I agree that a lot of the characters are mostly flat as well. Dosesn't seem to be much to them, especially the chinese lady (forgot her/her character's name).

Yes, I agree, the characters definitely need more fleshing out (pardon the double entendre)
Owen cracks me up! He is like a child in the way he has no thought for anything outside himself. And he gets some really good lines.

Well he did say, when he was admitting that he can't die, that when he finds "the right kind of doctor" he will ask him why he can't die. It seems like everybody else that the Doctor interacts with, Jack is spending the rest of his life (which in this case will be a very long time) looking for the Doctor and Torchwood is the best way to do that.

Maybe.

That's my rationalisation.

I found I was quite unsatisfied by the shallowness of each episode compared to the length. I mean with an hour of episode I thought I would get more out of it by the end.

I thought Jack was perfectly placed in Torchwood...He's had experience with aliens, so he can make himself useful while all the time he's searching for the Doctor...

The only problem I have with that is that at some point he would have come up against one - at least - of the other incarnations...But hey-ho...If he's going to wait for Eccleston then he's gonna have a long wait ...

I like this series...A lot...I can't wait for the rest of it...

To get back on topic (kind of): I will be really upset if the only way I can watch Torchwood is on DVD, pay-TV or bit-torrent download! I hope they show it over here or I shall be most put out!

I totally missed this whole series of threads, because it's not playing in the US so Torchwood meant nothing to me. Suppose we'll have to wait a few years to see it. Shuckydarn.
