Torchwood

Don't think you are all wrong.

Torchwood does veer close to the standard of other shows RTD writes and so far is all flash. Like Doctor Who, the show feels rushed with no time to build interest. But then his strong points as a writer aren't Sci/Fi or (TBH) story pacing, hopefully as other writers come in things will improve, or at least the goal will become apparent.

Could do without Cardiff and sex too. There is something about mass South Wales accents that can put your teeth on edge after a while, nearly as bad as Scouse.

Realism? I'd have been more surprised if Dumbkop had been trained, the rest of the team are there for the toys and really do not care for the rest.

"Woman police officer bumbles into setting an orgasm-seeking alien free, which results in her discovering otherwise hidden lesbian desires and tries to have sex with alien."
Not really... I thought they explained that reasonably well...
the alien was emitting a really powerful pheromone which turned on the bumbling police officer, even though she is not that way inclined.

I really enjoyed it but then I don't really ask a lot from my Entertainment Programmes, as long as it's enjoyed, then it's alright.

Torchwood episodes 1 and 2 were both thoroughly enjoyable in my book and that makes it just fine by me.

xx

I've got to agree with I,Brian. Is this the "adult science fiction" we were told we were getting? Avoid. Poorly plotted, poorly scripted, poorly acted (surprised about that) and even poorly shot (it looks cheaps, poorly lit etc). It makes me wonder if the guys at the bbc have ever actually watched any TV SF.

I am still looking forward to watching Torchwood and making up my own mind (assuming it is ever released in Australia). It doesn't sound promising though.

Gav, your description sounds like Red Dwarf but without the side-splitting laughs*. What a shame.

*Just realised that came out wrong. What I meant was :budget isn't everything. Sometimes the cheapest shows are still well written and acted.

I didnt work on Torchwood myself, but did enjoy it. The point about it being "adult" is in a sense that its similar to Buffy, or Angel...

Its not ground breaking adult drama, but has alot of adult themes (sex, drugs etc etc) so is targetted to the "adult" audience..

Im not Welsh either, but do actually like that its set in Cardiff. I didnt like the way Doctor who was filmed in Cardiff, but made to look like it was London.

Okay. I have seen some short samples on YouTube.
I have watched She Spies and The IT Crowd. I'm pretty sure I can handle Torchwood. :p
Actually I rather enjoyed them...

(If it is as bad as Mutant X, I'd rather sandpaper my whole body and roll in salt than watch it  )

It's not as bad as Mutant X. Not quite.

But it isn't as good as say, Sea of Souls.

Thats the important thing.. to decide for yourself.

There's highlight videos on the Torchwood site :

BBC - Torchwood - The Official Site homepage

Go have a look and see what you think

Don't tempt me! I want to see it pure and unsullied :)

I say this as someone who watches 'Supernatural' and enjoys it (ghastly, I know), but as long as Torchwood has a bit of sex, drugs and rock'n'roll, with double entendres sprinkled liberally throughout, I'll be pretty happy.

Maybe I should change my name to Philistine...hmmm...

I tell you what, I am really enjoying Torchwood. Its really easy to watch and good fun. The Dumbcop is very very dumb, and I had to shout a the screen telling her not to do things, but its amplifies that she is a fish out of water. The way they have written it from her point of view helps the audience relate in a human way, rather than the blasé treatment the rest of the crew give to these amazing artifacts and devices.

I can see I Brian's point of view, but then I never expected a hard hitting drama. It has started to investigate the emotions and wants/needs of the main characters and is fleshing them out gradually. I really liked the influence on Owen of Episode 3. It made him seem more human too.

I can only assume though, that this is a quiet start to what will be an action packed and exciting series. Couldnt ask for more at the moment, and I just think that Gwen/Dumbcop is soooo hot!!! Lol!

I think this series will improve - well i hope so. Its enjoyable enough, but does have a lack of credibility at present.

I think it will take a little time for the writers to see the reaction of the public to the characters, which will in turn shape and mould the characters more. They couldn't have said captain jack is a sex symbol if none of the viewing public fancied him... so they have to tread carefully at first..

I think the series will develop quite nicely...
