What drew you to SG1 and what keeps you?

I saw the advert on Sky and thought Its Macgyver (I had a crush on him before) I have to watch that. I also thought wow that guy looks just like James Spader did in the film.

I saw the film again recently and Michael Shanks has all of James Spaders mannerisms. My isn't he talented!
:)

Hi, Gilraen,

Are you going to pop into alien thread in Gerenal Discussions and name that alien for us!

I think that Stargate is a very good show.
Know what tune you into it keeps you glue
to your set from the time it comes on
to the time it it ends, and It leaves
you wanting more!

MY TURN.......

Hey, I have to admit, it was RDA...that man is GORGEOUS!! I have to thank my brother for pointing out the series to me, he remembers what I was like when MacGyver was on ;-) (He also got me addicted to Quantum Leap as well, but thats another story) But since those heady days of season one, I have grown to love the rest of the characters as well...God help anyone who disturbs me when Stargate is on.....

Welcome,Shortea!

Hi, Shortea,

Thank you for posting! Glad that you have delurked and posted. That is usually the hardest thing to do. Have started a welcome Shortea thread for you in the Newbie section. The pull down menu at the bottom of thepage is the easiest way to get there! Stargate is at the top of the menu and Newbies is near the top. Just use the Horizontal bar in the arrow and then ckick themouse on Newbie Forum! See you there!

I think...

The Learning Curve was the first ep I ever saw...it drew me...Marin was so cyuuuute! thats whay my alien in named after her!

What got me interested, well, I have to say, being as Egyptology is my subject, I saw the film and was hooked, great idea btw..
And when I saw the trailers for the series, yep, wow, this has to be good. And I was not disapointed.
But being a huge Spader fan I thought, yea ok, lets see if this guy can do good.
And well it only took until THE ENEMY WITHIN, and I was deft hooked, not only on the series but the actor as well.
Who would have known that 4 years later, I'd be running his fan club. Isn't it strange how things work out, apart from the fact I've met so many great new friends as well.
And not forgetting Vancouver..The list is endless.

Yes! RHG, I like the mythology and MS, also! It is a great show and MS is a fine actor! But I found even the smallest roles are filled with actors who make their parts live! That is really a wonder! Not just the leads but everyone! The attention to details on all the characters!

One must admit to being cynical at first. I thought the Film was excellent, but the TV series missed out one vital factor that the Movie's 'SG1' had to overcome.
Language.

But besides that, after watching with friends and getting hooked, I have come to the conclusion that SG is far superior to most other Sci-fi series currently running. (Ok, ALL excluding B5).

At our current level of technology it's nice to know we still have a place in the galactic scale - with far more advanced races asking for our 'help' and 'stupid ideas'. It's like one of us asking an Aborigine where to find water and food in the Australian outback - because there is no effective scientific method for doing so.

What upsets me is the Earthling propensity for using Nukes' to solve their problems. In FASA Mechowarrior finctional context it is considered the ultimate OFFENCE to use nukes in this fashion - and I agree.
Now think of this... The Oldest and Wisest of the Toch'ra in sybiosis with an Earthling trained in the shpere of Military Intelligence, it took only 2-3 episodes for this partnership to nuke a whole Star!

SO, besides the obvious luxury the SG teams have with language barriers - without the need of a Babelfish - SG's antics and plots are well thought out. BUT THEY'VE GOT TO STOP USING NUKES before some-thing out there really gets <trimmed> off!

Maybe someone will learn after "Chain Reaction!" but I doubt it. I think the when in doubt nuke it out is part of the military's problem! That is in part why Daniel is such an effective character.

i'm a newbie to the site too. i find it fasinating to read all the posts about my fav show. most everyone thinks i'm nuts for my obsession. though i have managed to hook a few people to the series. i've been watching since day 1 cause i loved the movie. i was really surprised to find the series even better. as much as i like all the guy characters and their quirks i happy to find a show that has a strong female character who isn't afraid of being smart.

Welcome Goldieb and Tatter!

Hi! Have started Welcome threads for you two in the Newbie Section. Just Click on Stargate on the branching link at the top of the page and look in the menu for Newbie Section!

nuts pfft!

Every one is a bit nuts...it is not crazy to be a rabid fan girl/boy of stargate! :)

Quite right Nariko! I worry about my own mounting obsession, but refuse to allow anyone else to woory about their own. Talk about not practising what you preach!
Yeah, the whole language problem is, to be frank, the show's major downfall, as the whole set-up, what with all these people being from Earth originally, and miracuously being able to speak Basic English, is totally impossible.
One wonders why, within the series, the writers chose to keep it that way. I suppose it was to not have too many obstacles in the way of forming what are otherwise good plots and an overall very good series.

Yup, I'm with Sheryl Crow on this one; "if it makes you happy, it can't be that bad".

Music and Stargate!, seems that's all my brain is capable of thinking about when I'm not sleeping.

Of all the possible things you can be addicted to, I think Stargate is definitely amongst the healthiest. (mind you, I haven't tried most of the others hehehe)

I can understand the advanced races such as the Tollen and the Asgard becoming quickly fluent in English, or having some translation device, but on the whole I agree..

Its safe to say that when the Goa'uld took humans from Earth and planted them across the galaxy, that the English language didn't exist in a recognisable form.

In the film they explore the language thing, but I think mostly they just don't have time in every episode to let Daniel work out the language and translate everything, it would spoil the flow of the series.... so everyone speaks English :p

The Movie!

It was deffinately the movie!!! lol! No, it was Daniels character in the movie. I was charmed and frankly being a bit of eccentric "intellectual" I loved how much he actually got to do! So that was the innitial draw to the show after the movie! :) Danny is somtimes the only reason I'll watch and Episode! My favorite was "Fair Game"

That man called Daniel!

Oh yeah, I have to admit to being quite the fan of Daniel. He is such a good character, and there's far more to his personality then some of the others, but that's a point for another thread, but...
Somehow, he's good even when intended as a secondary character for the show. An e.g. of this is in 'Spirits'; it was SO funny when he was talking to the raven, and when he gave the Indian man a guided tour of a store room!

To keep to the subject, I have just realised that SG-1 fills in my 'expectations' of Sci-Fi where the books I read do not. As a life-long bookworm, I am sometimes sceptical about just how seriously a TV series like this can be taken, until I find something within it that, beforehand I had only heard of as a concept in Sci-Fi but had never read it let alone seen it. A example of this is 'Holiday'. I had never, ever seen or read a body-swapping thing before, though I'd had the ideas enough myself and that one was totally amazing to see.
