Batman Begins (2005)

Re: Batman Begins!

In terms of style, it's right up there with Batman Returns (the best of the old ones imo). In terms of comic book adaptations... right there with Spider-man and X-men.

Great, though probably not the best.

Re: Batman Begins!

Just seen the Batman Begins movie... :D

Very good film, especially the way it delves into Batman's past/origins and the motives for his actions.

Christian Bale, who plays batman, is easily the best one yet. Unlike some members I didn't mind Michael Caine as Alfred and I thought he definitely had some of the best one-liners in the movie.

My No.2 Superhero film behind the original Spriderman movie starring Toby McGuire.

Some people claim it's a fairly dark and YEs it gets into the psychology of the character but I didn't think it was as dark or Gothic as other films I've seen like Dark City or The Crow another two of my favs... :

Looking forward to the Fantastic Four film coming out soon, saw trailer at the Cinema and looked quite good... :D

Re: Batman Begins!

After having seen it today I'd say this movie mostly blows chunks.

In the name of build-up we're treated to the most tediously executed scenes the sum of which tells us little more than what we already know about the Batman. Making a serious movie out of a comic book hero is one thing, Tim Burton did a great job of that with his Batman movies, but this is just plainly boring filler material designed to kill time and give the appearance of an epic tale.

Ras-al-ghul in the movie is a crapshoot, he looks like Morpheus with chinky eyes and stupid whiskers. With all the supposed intellect they have the League of Shadows comes up with likely the most idiotic plot to cleanse Gotham...it's the sort of plot the villains in a spoof of a James Bond movie are likely to come up with. Scarecrow is also a huge bore...Scarecrow's bag of tricks is just not big enough to give him space in a movie and the guy who plays him is thoroughly unimpressive. None of the villains are worth anything in this movie.

As for the good guys both Alfred and Commissioner Gordon are screwed over by the actors who play them. Gordon turns out to be a total pussy and Alfred...didn't he ever read rule number 13 of the Butlers' Handbook which says that a good butler ought to speak in a clipped accent and knot his tie properly, and not act like he'd been unduly busy in the wine cellar? The Waynes may have been billionaires but they sure got shortchanged on the household help. The sidestory about Bruce's childhood crush and how she "inspires" him to go crimefighting is complete ass likely inspired by the success of the Spiderman films.

And as for Batman...I do like that they tried to give a little more meat to the Bruce Wayne character here. Some nice touches like him taking a gun to the parole release of his parents' killers with the aim of killing him...but most of it again tends to be boring. As for Batman's code of honour about not killing anyone including criminals...it'd have probably been more impressive if after that he didn't set off explosions and road accidents with the likelihood of killing / maiming scores of policemen and bystanders. Hell, that was no Batman, that was John MacLane from Die Hard.

Many of the scenes are jerkily shot and edited...it looks like Chris Nolan got his big break far before he was ready for it and came up rather short on having a proper vision of what he wants from his crew.

Seriously this is the one of the most overrated movies ever. It's almost like people were so happy that this wasn't like the Schumacher movies that they decided to applaud it regardless of how it turned out.

Re: Batman Begins!

 Totally disagree with you Ravenus

The beginning of the film (the prison bit) did have some bad directing and some terrible editing (didnt actually see the brawl fight)

But it picked up from then.

If you're going to have the supervillian in the film as the scarecrow then what other type of plot would be more appropriate? I thought the casting of Cilian Murphy as the scarecrow was perfect, he played dr. crane in the eerie manner required. and the mask of the scarecrow was FINALLY scarey enough (which its not in the comics or the animated series).

With alfred, why do we have to conform to what a 'typical' butler is? I thought that Caine would annoy me being a cockney chappy butler, but it worked! and i think thats the most important thing.

I think the film was fantastic. Apart from the opening 5-10minutes i loved every moment of it, and will see it again in the cinema. I'd definatly say its one of the THE movies of the year.

Re: Batman Begins!

Yeah, I quite liked this movie, too. It wasn't as good as the original and the best, but it was pretty darn close. Ravenus - just on saying Burton delivered a serious Batman, can't really agree with you there - the original was dark, sure, but it was also full of Burton's trademark campiness as well. Nolan has portrayed Batman in this one as infinitely more vengeful, full of anger and not afraid to harness it. Bale does a great job, won't knock off Keaton as the best, but again comes close. I thought the villians and their plot was a little under done. Cillian Murphey was underused as The Scarecrow. Katie Holmes was a touch tacked-on. I, too, mourned the loss of Michael Gough, but Michael Caine does a good, albeit very different job of Alfred. And I thought Gary Oldman as a young Jim Gordon was inspired. Overall, one of the better films I've seen this year.

Re: Batman Begins!

I finally saw this and i thought it was great. Easily up there with the original Batman and Batman Returns, I would say a slight bit better then the first 2.

Bale was good as Batman (though i will always remember him as American Psycho), he just has that darkness about him that a man who never got over his parents death should have.

When I first heard Cilian Murphy was playing Scarecrow, I thought it was a female. But he did good as Scarecrow just under-used.

Liam Neeson was good.

Caine was good and provided a humerous 'partner'.

Morgan Freeman was his usual best.

I just wish Batman would not reveal his identity to woman. I mean it would make a good pick up line but woman talk.

Re: Batman Begins!

I wonder if Katie will make it into the second (sixth?) one - the form in the past seems to be woman finds out at end of movie, is never seen or heard from again.

I forgot to mention Morgan Freeman - I thought the inclusion of Lucius Fox was great. I mean, in the others, we're sort of left to assume that Bruce has just constructed all these high-tech apparati himself, MacGyver style. But here we see an ally who's able to outfit Batman with his gear, albeit from Wayne Enterpises.

Re: Batman Begins!

Atleast they touched on Bruce Wayne having troubles with being out all night and staying up all day.

Fox was funny, 'I got a new job....Yours'.

'Didnt you get the memo?'

Your right about the women, they never last long, but Bruce Wayne was never married?

Re: Batman Begins!

Bute tell me between all his soul-searching and Batman-rigmaroling...where does Bruce Wayne actually find the funds to buy back the assets of Wayne industries which was supposed to be sold off for lack of running capital?

Re: Batman Begins!

I am not too sure but I believe Alfred had share or something in it, remember the 'Rolls Royce' line, and I would say Fox would have some shares in it, he may have gotten the majority of it through them.
Plus he inherited a lot of money from Wayne Enterprises, although that went to Alfred I think.

(this is just from memory, someone may know better)

Someone believes 2 employees (not even direct heirs) have sufficient funds stashed away to buy the bulk of a multi-million dollar enterprise)? I believe Alfred says to Bruce in the film that it is (Thomas?) Wayne's philanthrophy towards Gotham city that has led to the depreciation of the Wayne empire's capital...surely he wouldn't keep the money away from young 'mawster' Bruce?

Re: Batman Begins!

They thought Bruce Wayne dead and Alfred was in the will, dont know what he got out of it though, but it wouda been a fair chunk.

Re: Batman Begins!

I believe it was Wayne Industries (basically Bruce's inheritance) which was getting sold for lack of running capital. If the will had that amount of liquid assets going the reappearance of Bruce would have immediately negated the need for a sale. And I doubt Thomas Wayne in the will put out more money for his butler than for his son.

Re: Batman Begins!

I figured Bruces would goto Alfred seeing as he was his only family.

Re: Batman Begins!

Saw Batman: Mask of the Phantasm yesterday...90's animated film by the people behind the series on TV...pretty good, although the "surprise" it tries to pull can be predicted a mile off. It showed in Bruce's flashbacks some of the aspects also covered in BB, like his early crimefighting escapades and the discovery of the batcave.

And people, please stop with the lame explanations of how Alfred had the money. Nobody in his right mind would make a will where the solid businesses and the money would be separated. If Wayne Industries did not have the money, nobody had it.

Re: Batman Begins!

I saw the movie last night. And it's the best movie for me this year. I loved the cast and the story. I loved Keaton, but Christian Bale did a hell of a good job, too.

For those who didn't see it, I recommend to go and see it with open eyes. Don't try to make associations with the other Batmans during the show. Hollywood don't spoil us with to many good productions lately, so enjoy this one.

If I see another one with the line "I have to call the President", I'll throw my TV away.
