The Revived Tolkien Trivia

I'm sorry, I won't be online for a few days, so can't keep track of the Trivia for a while. Therefore, whoever reads this first is allowed to ask a question!

A free question? Cripes, don't mind if I do. :)

Okay.......

*tries to think of something that will take Pyan more than 5 seconds*

What is Sam's opinion of the sound of Khûzdul?

Indeed! You even beat Cthulhu, well done. :)

I know, I know, it was easy.

Still, you get a bell!

And the pleasure of asking......

*jumps up and down*

Oh! Oh!

Ok, who said:

'I feel like spring after winter, and sun on the leaves; and like trumpets and harps and all the songs I have ever heard!'

...and as he listened, the thought came to Sam that he had not heard laughter, the pure sound of merriment, for days upon days without count...
'How do I feel?' he cried. 'Well, I don't know how to say it. I feel, I feel' - he waved his arms in the air - 'I feel like spring after winter, and sun on the leaves; and like trumpets and harps and all the songs I have ever heard!'
The Lord of the Rings, The Return of the King, IV - The Field of Cormallen (p. 988 in my beast)

So now I have a tail, too? Heavens.....bunnikins?! The Sombre Angel has become bunnikins?!:eek:

Okay, drag queen. ;):D

Here we go............I'll try just this:

Who has the epithet 'the Cruel'?

Sauron: One of his names in Sindarin was Gorthaur the Cruel.

Among those of (Morgoth's) servants that have names the greatest was that spirit whom the Eldar called Sauron, or Gorthaur the Cruel.
Silmarillion - Valaquenta - Of the Enemies.

Ha! I knew I'd been too non-specific. Reckon I'd have made it too easy otherwise, though.

I have to give you the bell, of course, since your answer is absolutely correct in relation to my stated question.

But while it's certainly your go, for an extra bell, can you name another one?

Anything for an extra bell!

Caradhras, the Redhorn.

'Caradhras was called the Cruel, and had an ill name,' said Gimli, 'long years ago, when rumour of Sauron had not been heard in these lands.'
FotR - Book II - Chapter III - The Ring goes South.

That's the man! (Or the mountain, rather!) Always had a soft spot for Caradhras, and loved the ambiguity of that passage. Wasn't impressed with the emphasis on Saruman in the film. :)

Two bells! Tinkle-tinkle!

Thank you.....

Can you find a quote that shows the Eldar fought as horse-archers?

Where is them up-notches or whatever you call 'em, Mr. Pyan?

Then Fingon prince of Hithlum rode against him with archers on horseback[.] ... Fingon won great praise, and the Noldor rejoiced[.]
The Silmarillion, Quenta Silmarillion, Ch. XIII Of the Return of the Noldor

Not yet, matey....you'll recognise one when you see it......:D

Oh, and that's one example (of three)...have a bell, and away you go.....:)

Tolkien himself.

I have now! Probably more than most other folk; and find myself in a v. tangled wood.

Letters - footnote to no 319, to Roger Lancelyn Green, discussing the origin of the word "Hobbit".

Hmph  I thought that one was though enough!

Oh, and now you got me rhyming too!

Try this then. Coherent One:

In what context did JRRT state he was not going to be treated like Mrs Tiggywinkle?

:D
