The Revived Tolkien Trivia

Thanks Pyan - when you said a specific comparison I thought it must be in letters.

My question is: from where does the world look wide and wild?

'When the world was young, and the woods were wide and wild, the Ents and the Entwives--and there were Entmaidens then; ah! the loveliness of Fimbrethil,of Wandlimb the lightfooted,in the days of our youth.'

Thus spoke Treebread, The Two Towers, chapter: Treebeard, pg 93

That's the one I had in mind too, goldhawk, and why I asked HB the question - I thought that a slip of the fingers had changed woods to world...

Yeah, I didn't think it was right. I think I know what he's talking about and I think it's in Letters, which I don't have. Sigh. Maybe if I really good, Santa will bring them.

Oops, I was wrong. It's in the Lord of the Rings:

The world looked wide and wild from Weathertop.

FotR, A Knife in the Dark, page 252

PS: Santa I would still like to get Letters :)

Oops, I should pay more attention to what I read.

Now try this one: where is Bamfurlong?

From Pippin:

'I know these fields and this gate,' he said. 'This is Bamfurlong, old Farmer Maggot's land. That's his farm away there in the trees.'

The Fellowship of the Ring, Book 1, Chapter IV, A Short Cut to Mushrooms

More specifically, in/near Buckland, to the South of Bucklebury Hill between Stock and Marish, west of Bucklebury Ferry in the East Farthing of The Shire, in the midst of the ancient Kingdoms of Cardolan, Rhudaur and Arthedain of the Lost Realm of Arnor, Eriador, Middle Earth.

*Wonders if pendantism can be extended to cartographical references:D*

You forgot to add the Little Kingdom, the Music of the Ainur, the Vision of Eru at the end. :p

The bell goes to Grimward.

Apparently, patience isn't a legal virtue...

O.K., what prominent notable was slain at Månbergen? The answer requires at least 2 quotes, the second of which I will accept from any of several possibilities.

Part of the way there, Marky.

And the notable? I will note that "notable" could be exchanged for "noble", too, and that proximity to Månbergen can be assumed.

Was it Maedhros?

And being in anguish and despair he cast himself into a gaping chasm filled with fire, and so ended

Silmarillion, "Of the Voyage of Earendil"

The proximity to Ered Luin (Manbergen) can be assumed because by then Beleriand is under water, and Eonwe's camp (from which he and Maglor have just taken the Silmaril) was probably in the west of the remaining landmass - the fact that there is a fiery chasm also points to it being close to the region of upheavals. Also, the March of Maedhros was right next to Ered Luin.

Hmm, a worthy attempt, but that's not who I had in mind, Mr. HB sir,....

Had a different take on the geography, but the "under water" part would be compelling, except...

I would urge you to look at the wording of the challenge again. I think you will find that, without considerable interpretation (and we HAVE been know to interpret here!), the manner of Maedhros' death doesn't meet the challenge's requirements...

Marky, no apologies necessary! Carry on, both of you!

Yes, I was aware that your word "slain" made my answer even more dubious than it was already ;). Oh well ...

Still, I'm a bit confused by you saying "slain at Manbergen" and then "proximity to Manbergen can be assumed". Maybe you could clarify as to whether it should be "at" or "near to"? Because let's face it, we need help

"Near to" is quite acceptable, chief. I have one hint stowed already, but am thinking it will remove too many possibilities all at once...

Would it be King Arvedui?

"...for the ship had not reached open sea when a great storm of wind arose, and came with blinding snow out of the North; and it drove the ship back upon the ice and piled ice up against it. Even the mariners of Círdan were helpless, and in the night the ice crushed the hull, and the ship floundered. So perished Arvedui Last-king, and with him the palantiri were buried at sea."

He is noted also since he left his ring with the Snowmen to be redeem for their goodwill and services of his stay with them.
