The Revived Tolkien Trivia

Sorry, Pyan. I don't know what's gotten into me. First I half-answer Grim's question, then I answer your question wrongly AND used even an illegal source...

'Sall right, Marky; if they still put up with me, you've nothing to worry about!:D

Knew about the Moria quote, but rather agree with HB; that doesn't invalidate the possibility of trade between the dwarf fathers. At any rate, I too like the mithril bell (surprise!), and am sticking to my presumption, Mr. Green-Tentacled Christmas!

(Now, of course, Pyan will find a quote indicating that the Lord of Nogrod insulted the beard of Durin's wife , and the two cities weren't speaking to each other!)

Damn! *thumbs frantically through JRRT bookshelf* I'm sure I've read that somewhere....:D

Time for a clue?

After all, I wouldn't want anyone to be left with a red face and feeling blue over this...:p

What???! That's the clue?

It's like I was saying to my mum only the other day, you can dress eldritch gods-from-beyond-darkness in Santa suits all you like, it doesn't mean they know anything about the spirit of Christmas.

Yes, that's the clue - in fact, two clues - and it should be quite easy to get to the answer from them. At least I think so, but then again, I would, wouldn't I?...:p

I was also talking to my mum the other day, telling her what a grand, knowledgeable group we had in the Trivia Forum, and she was pleased that I was associating with you lot.

Now, I'm sure that you don't want to make me admit I was wrong, now...:D

"Anybody", or "anyone", for those who don't speak Elvish. I am stumped, after checking out Bilbo's red face in an Unexpected Party.

Me too. Tom Bombadil is described as having a red face and a blue jacket, but I've read through the whole section with him in, and nothing.

Well, "FA" certainly describes how much progress I've made.

Is anyone interested in making a collective effort? Since it's Christmas? Tommies and Jerries kicking a ball about? Trenchcoats for goalposts, etc?

Well, I don't have Letters (please, Santa, please) but I remember something about when Men saw the first rising Sun that they look with wonder on a wide and wild world.

Well, it's either The Silmarillion, The Children of Hurin, or Letters in which we should be looking. At least we are narrowed down to around 1000 pages.

Wrong race, GH...
And you only need to look at 439 pages, Clan!

"Red faced" in the first clue could be a reference to Caranthir, who was given the name "Carnistir" ("Red faced" by his mother)

"Blue" could then be a reference to Ered Lindon?

Ha, and there it is!

Now the people of Caranthir dwelt furthest east beyond the upper waters of Gelion, about Lake Helevorn [...] and they climbed the heights of Ered Luin and looked eastward in wonder, for wild and wide it seemed to them were the lands of Middle Earth

Silmarillion, ch13, "Of the Return of the Noldor"

(Edit: forgot to say the answer! Which is, "from Ered Luin".)

Well done, HB! A Christmas Bell to you, and your turn to be reviled by the Triviaites...:D

Ah, should have stayed where I was (ie, in Ered Luin!). The red face sent me looking for scarlet-faced Sam in "A Conspiracy Unmasked", in Fellowship.

Good job, HB...

It did seem a rather clever thing to do, to combine three of the previous answers to set a new question - but I thought I'd been too obscure for a while.

I find it difficult to strike a happy medium between far too easy and positively abstruse. Feel free to say if I stray too far into esotericism, please...:p
