The Revived Tolkien Trivia

I haven't read the LotR all that often, only about twenty times. And I stopped reading it after the movies came out. The Similarion, less than fifteen.

ONLY twenty times??? I started in High School my senior year and read them about once a year for several years until I started having kids. I've read Similarion twice and Children of Huron once since a friend recently loaned me his (after I told him about this thread ). I've never read the letters at all, so I read and learn. Someday, I'll beat you all!!!:D:D

I've lost track, WW, butat least 30ish times straight through for LotR, half that for the Hobbit. Silmarillion, maybe 10, CoH three-four times. Letters I often dip into, read a ew, they're a good way of seeing the human side of JRRT.

Then there's CJRT's History, 12 volumes, and any amount of other stuff on the Great Man...

Well, it's nice to know a lot about one subject...:D

And it could have been model railways, or stamp-collecting, I suppose...

Nah...I can give it up any time I want....

Namarie, meldomelin nolmo!

Lord of the Rings has probably been 20 times since high school for me, too, with possibly as many for The Hobbit. Probably 4 times for The Silmarilion, and only twice for Children of Huron. Once also for Farmer Giles, and (probably not a surprise!) have only read Letters once straight thru (it's better to read it Py's way, I'm thinking). Finally, have only begun cracking the History books....

*In lieu of smelling salts, wafts a basket of the good farmer's mushrooms under WW's nose*

Just means I've read them a bunch, retention is another story....

*WARNING GROSS SUBJECT MATTER*

matter...too funny

Egads! What are those? Ent poop?

And speaking of poop, they have over the counter products for retention you know...

I'm the only person I know who can have this much fun by myself...

*Adopts as stern a visage as a fiery entity can*

Now see here your wereness, there are any number of hobbits herein (based on the participation in the What's Your Hobbit Name thread) who'll take umbrage with your likening fine Stock mushrooms to fecal matter......:D

Have to admit that I don't care for them much, either.....

Erm, weren't we supposed to be looking for "Frenchman" references?;)

Let me re-state the question:

Now, why would the Elves not like a Frenchman to mention Paris?

After all, that's why we're here. innit...:D

Hey! If it looks like, smells like.....I'll stop there

And don't look at me like that, your face will stick that way.....:D

Erm...frenchman? Oh and y'all knock it off with the latin, will ya? I'm too lazy to run it through the translator.

Aaaaand anywhere elves and frenchman are mentioned in the same book, much less the same paragraph, or even the same sentence, it seems obvious to me it's in his letters of which I do not possess.

*raspberry*:p

I imagine Pyan's being a bit more cryptic than that, WW. I'd guess it has something to do with the way a Frenchman would pronounce Paris - having said which, that line of thought has led me nowhere.

Ahh...I'm surprised that you wouldn't see a place where that line, if it's correct, would lead, HB...

I can't find anything with Paris... like parry or something... nothing in the index of France or French language in the Letters... Yes, I'm stuck. Good question, Pyan!

Maybe elves and frenchman smell the same??

Hey, don't laugh, it's no worse than guessing letters or pronunciations!:D

COH maybe? But I read that one recently and I think I would remember a mention of anything french...on the other hand, I've slept since then....;)

I have a feeling it has more to do with something associated with both elves and frenchman....I don't know.....something like taste in furniture or weather patterns or some such. The requisite quote would have to mention the similarities and not actually include the word frenchman.

Soooo, that having been said, perhaps it has something to do with the french's attitude or feelings about Paris as opposed to what an elf's attitude or feelings about the equivalent of Paris in their world?

My brain hurts
