The chronicles word counter!

I haven't been on here for ages - you lot always put me off with your massive word counts!! ;)

However, feeling excited about new WIP - longest piece I've worked on so far (aiming at around 45-50,000 words). Got 3200 words done today! Who knew hallucination scenes were so fun to write? Nothing like poisoning your MC to shake things up...

Project nickname: Dream
Genre: fantasy, middle grade
Start Date: Sept 1, 2013
Word Count: 25,077

Hi folks,

I'm new to Chronicles SFF. This thread is a great idea. I will try to keep an eye on it and offer encouragement.

My WiP:

Title: Shield Your Eyes From The Light (too long / clunky?)
Genre: High Fantasy
Start Date: June 2013
Word count: 23,967

I also have the beginnings of a short Sci-fi based on the island I live on. I'm excited for that, but I want to concentrate on the above.

Juliana - really impressed with 3,200 in a day... teach me :)

Is 1,000 words a day a good target?

I follow this thread with great interest (even if I don't comment). It's really interesting to see what you're all up to. Encouraging actually. Writing can be so lonely that it's nice to know there are others head down, typing furiously.

I've not updated my stats for a while; so here's some new numbers.

Title: Hunted (Intro to Within - below)
Genre: Dark Urban Fantasy
16,465 words (Complete)
With betas and going through final (hopefully) edits.

Title: Within
Follow on from above.
74,010 words (aiming for 85k) First draft complete. Rewrite slowly happening!

Website. Twitter. Facebook. Blog. Goodreads. All up and running. Being managed when I have the time. (I've added these as they're all part of the process, in my mind).

Long titles can work. I'm reading 'For Those in Peril on the Sea' - it's a bit of a mouthful but it works.

Is 1,000 words a day a good target?

Remedy, I would say 1,000 a day is a great target. I usually manage between 1 and 2,000, unless I'm doing heavy editing on what I wrote the day before, in which case I might only get a few hundred words out... But I have a lot of free time at the moment to sit and write, so am taking full advantage! :)

Write to whatever target you're comfortable with. I average about 400 words a day!

I'm happy with 500 a day. To be honest, with the kids, I'm just happy if I get any writing done in a day!

Having said that, if I'm writing the first draft I'll happily hit 1000 per hour and can spend from 7pm to midnight in the zone. I'm not a person to be around when I'm writing the first draft though; I tend to get so caught up in the story that it's all I can see until it's 'down on paper' so to speak.

Editing is a much more civilised affair and I'm happy if I can hit an hour editing each day. Sometimes that involves writing additional scenes, sometimes deleting scenes. So it's difficult to put an actual word count on it.

I rather like the title, too.

It's incredibly subjective how much we write. I don't count, exactly, but if I'm writing and not editing and have a couple of hours at it, I usually knock out about 2-3k. Other days it can take me an hour to edit 500 words.

Fwiw my update:

Abendau Falling - briefly stalled while I consider character responses to circumstances.

Waters - readthrough and edit 100 pages to go, but I've climbed to the heady heights of 68,413. 70 is in sight! Hooray!

If I get up to 2k words a week I'm very happy, that would be a book a year.
I've had a record 3.5k+ in a sitting.
I edit as I go too, so that may be why I'm slower.

Thanks all. Its encouraging to see everyone's differences and similarities... Just encouraging to speak to others on the same journey really.

I edit as I go as well Bowler1. I had to kill the beginning of a new chapter today too. Determined to have good wordcount news next week!

Nice one Springs! I hope mine ends up somewhere near the 70K mark.

Good week for me! Almost 7000 words added, and just over 27,000 in total now. Hoping next week to push past the 30,000 mark. Roughly two thirds through and lots of exciting action bits to write about now. :)

Remedy, I also tend to take a step back and edit before I start on new writing. I find that it helps to get in the mood of my story if I start writing sessions by going through what I wrote the day before and tidying it up a bit before plunging on.

Shuttered is at 53,431. Fingers crossed I'll actually finish it this weekend. I think I only have two scenes left to write. Just trying to work out which of the MCs should get the PoV.

now that i've started my second attempt at writing in earnest, i thought i'd join in on here to keep track...

The 25th Hour

Urban Fantasy (i guess.... still not sure just what that genre entails!)

Started 15th September

Status 11792 words

The 25th Hour

Status: 18418 words with maybe more to come tonight....

i write on the train to work and try to get at least 1000 words on the combined commute..generally i can do 1500-2000 per day

I have literally just finished the first draft of my romance, Shuttered. Woo!

*fireworks*

I was aiming for 60k and I'm at 55,170 so I'm happy with that. Now to send it to betas.

And I've literally just finished the fourth draft of Waters. 69k, and I was aiming for 70, so I'm happy. Now betas...

Swop? :D

I, Singularity now at 77,434 words...setting the scene for the hellhound, and tying up a lot of threads of foreshadowing and stuff, if that makes any sense at all...:)

Hardly anything on my WIPs this weekend, I did sweet FA, no house chores or anything - I was really lazy and loved it.

Batteries recharged - I'm ready to go again.

You can never edit too much, Remedy (of course you can edit too much, but the statement would lack impact then).
That's a cool word count, Mr Orange - I'm feeling envy.... or is that rage? Where are my RAY GUNS!
