Casting news from the TV series

The only thing in which I've seen Rory McCann was The Book Group; I doubt I'll bne confusing his rôle in that series with his portrayal of the Hound.

(They may have to feed the actor playing Gregor with extra porage, though.)

Ahhh yes, I remember him having a Scottish accent (which I assume is his normal one). I wonder if he'll keep it for the series.

Some new clues on GRRM's blog about two new castings.

The first deals with a "Little Brother". The speculation is either Joseph Mawle as Benjen or Jayden Chamberlain as Bran.

The second deals with the "Old Knight". There seems to be disagreement over whom this is. Most think is Barristan Selmy, other say Rodrick Cassel. Some names that have come forward are Derek Jacobie, Alun Armstrong, Ron Donachie and, get this, Sean Connery because of a "Pussy Galore" reference in the clue.

If Connery were cast in this show in any form it would be pure WIN. I'd love Connery for Barristan Selmy. Mainly because it'd mean he's sticking around for a bit :)

I was pretty convinced by the arguments for the actor being Joseph Mawle (and given his looks, that he's been hired to play Benjen).

Sean is a bit long in the tooth to play BFS. Twenty years ago, Connery could've put the F in BFS... but not any longer. I'd put Connery as Hoster Tully, a man of tremendous physical strength and charisma now wasting upon his deathbed. "Cat. Lil' Cat, did ye wait for me?... Tanshy... Forgive me. Tanshy."

Sorry, Boaz but I disagree. Connery would rock as BFS. The real problem is that he is supposed to be officially retired from acting. Maybe he's a fan. maybe he liked the character so much. Maybe I am dreaming in technicolour.

The other Board seems to be favouring Alun Armstrong as Rodrick Cassel.

I just realized that BFS won't be in the pilot right? Since he doesn't come into play until he meets the royal party at the Neck with Renly. However, they could do flashbacks???

Here's the chance everyone's been waiting for to be an extra on the series. Although GRRM says they have greater need for men who can ride horses.

I have the problem that this is all be filmed in Northern Ireland and, well, there's a rather large and cold ocean in between me and it.

If you look at the "Old Knight" clue
"has been a colonel, a doctor, a friar, a nazi, a sergeant, a superintendant, a corporal, and a minister,

Sean Connery does have a few of them up his sleeve
Doctor in Medicine Man
Friar in Name of the Rose
Nazi in Woman In Love
Colonel in Murder on the Orient Express
Detective Sergeant in The Offence

and he does know Pussy Galore

I'm still looking for the minister, the superintendant and the corporal though.

A quick glance at Alun Armstrong's IMDb page reveals a sergeant, a minister (well, a pastor), a superintendant, a doctor, and a corporal, so I wouldn't knight Sir Sean just yet...

EDIT: Actually, if you read through the comments on GRRM's blog it becomes fairly obvious that it's Ron Donachie. Whom I've never heard of.

(That would be Cathy Gale's laughter....)

People say my generation is vulgar and obscene....seriously, since when is Pussy Galore fit for polite company?

It was deemed acceptable in 1959 (the book) and 1964 (the film), and the film was on TV on a Sunday afternoon here a week or so ago.

And it isn't as if perfectly some innocent (and real) names don't have more than dubious connotations. (There's one - I won't use it here - which is barely dubious in the US, but (was?) far more so in the UK.)

As an aside, we often think of the fifties and early sixties as more innocent times than today; but there are quite a few "dubious", "hidden" jokes in the supposedly innocent comedies of that era (jokes which I heard when young and didn't notice at all, and wasn't meant to notice; it's only when they reappear on afternoon TV that one realises just how "racy" lines in some of those scripts could be).

(Oh, and given the context, "Galore" was somewhat of an exaggeration.)

Bronson Webb has been cast as Will, one of the three members of the Night's Watch who appear in the opening scene of the pilot.

Gared has also been cast, but not announced yet. Apparently they're waiting to close a deal on Ser Waymar Royce as well.

Whilst they'll be on screen for about five minutes maximum, these three roles are important as they set the tone for the whole series.

for example, the episode All That Glitters from the original series of Lost in Space, where the family encounter a man called Bolix. By all accounts the scriptwriter had a whale of a time introducing him to the family, one by one.....
"Bolix, my daughter Penny; Penny, Bolix...."
