Casting news from the TV series

Joseph Mawle, who plays Benjen Stark, was on tonight's episode of Merlin, playing a warlock named Alvarr. He was very good indeed, one of the best guest actors they've had on the show, and I feel a bit sorry that now he'll only have a few brief scenes as Benjen in the first couple of episodes and that vanish for, at the very least, three or four years, if not for good.

Interestingly, Richard Ridings, who plays Gared, was also in Merlin a few weeks ago as a slave trader.

Well....they already had the costumes I guess....:p

Guy Pearce would be perfect for this series...could play a few different characters from the stories well I think.

GRRM posted pics of Masie Williams (Arya) practicing with Needle (in her backyard?). My mom would never have let me play with real steel... we only had plastic guns... and sometimes when I'd be Captain America, I'd use the the top of the old metal trash can.

My mom got me one of those bow and arrow sets with the arrows having suction cups at the end. Of course, i took the cups off and tried to sharpen the ends by scraping them on the sidewalk. Needless to say, they were immediately confiscated before I could do any damage. The cap gun got taken away after i fired it right behind my mother and almost gave her a heart attack.

I think they got me a doll and carriage after that. :D seriously

The Tower just posted that Tamzin Merchant is definitely out as Daenarys.

Rumors have swirled on this subject for weeks, but we now have confirmation that Tamzin Merchant is out of the Game of Thrones. No reason was given and no replacement for the role of Daenerys has been named yet, but Merchant marks the show's biggest departure since Jennifer Ehle "dropped out" as Catelyn last month. Scenes from the pilot are expected to be reshot in the next few months.
The Chicago Tribune's Maureen Ryan broke the casting development today as part of her lengthy interview with George R. R. Martin. In addition to discussing the HBO adaptation, GRRM talks about television and film, deadlines and delays, and, yes, A Dance with Dragons:
"It’s obviously the worst I’ve ever blown a deadline... and I am very aware of that," Martin said. "Some fans seem to think I’m not conscious of that, but I am aware of it every day. I think I am approaching the end of 'Dance,' knock wood."

Peter Dinklage (Tyrion) is in a new movie called "I love you too". It's an Australian film, so those in north America and possibly Europe wont see it. He has gotten some good reviews. It looks kinda funny. Any Aussie might have a laugh. Others.... may not.

"Others"

On what I think is Australia's best movie review show this movie got I think around 3 stars out of 5, but it was agreed that Peter Dinklage's performance was excellent.

The old bloke with the white beard and the woman with the annoying laugh. Thats the show. I guess we dont truly give a s*** if a movie is good or bad. Just watch it and find out for yourself.

Holy moley!

Well I like 'em. I'd prefer to learn from them if a movie is bad rather than sit through it for two hours or whatever.

I think SBS has a movie show? I guess I was being a little hyperbolic :p

To go slightly off topic (or rather, continue slightly off topic) Margaret and David used to be on SBS's The Movie Show, but got fired for being too old, as they were replaced with three hep young cats that annoyed the living blank out of me. Mags and Dave moved to the ABC's At The Movies, which continues to this day. The Movie Show, meanwhile, died a death. I'm fairly certain it's not on anymore, anyway, and if it is, it's not the flagship it once was...

I'm curious as to who will replace Tamzin Merchant as Dany. It's interesting that they filled the role of Cat so quickly, yet this one seems to be dragging out....

Bugger, Merchant's out? :( She was a great Dany in my eyes.. The perfect balance of beauty and eeriness that can be expected of those creepy Valyrians.

Well she's a looker, no doubt, but the resemblance to Dany at this point is, er, slight. Although I guess it's hard to find a natural silverhead.

Obviously Clarke will have to have her hair dyed. Although it's worth noting that Harry Lloyd, who plays Viserys, will also have to have the same treatment. There's also a much greater resemblence between Clarke and Lloyd than between Lloyd and Merchant, which is a bonus.

Any idea why Ms Merchant left?

No. The current favourite theory is that since we know she's picked up a bit of movie work recently, she (or her agent) may have balked at her committing to a less lucrative (if more steady) TV role for potentially up to ten years which took up 7 months of the year and didn't leave her much time to do other work. Certainly all the indications are that no-one had a problem with her performance in the pilot.

It's a shame Kick-Ass didn't come out a year or two ago. I couldn't have been the only one watching Chloe Grace Moretz (aka Hit-girl) in action thinking, 'Arya!' :)

Cracking little actress, too, though I'm sure Maisy Williams was well chosen.

I loved Kick-Ass. I'm not sure why, but Arya never came to mind when I watched it, but now that you've mentioned it, ................... :)
