Casting news from the TV series

I agree with acting outweighing the need for exact character resemblance to the book. However, in a series in which the author goes to great length to describe the physical appearance of his characters, it just caught me off guard with this particular character.

Maybe its the abundance of facial hair that he has, which doesnt give me the full Jon Snow feel. In my personal visualization of how he matured throughout the series i wouldnt have thought he would have that much facial hair until at least AFFC.

I never mind someone offering there $0.02 to any comments i make, as it has made me a rich man over the years, figuratively, and somewhat literally.

Given that some of the child characters had to have their ages increased, I expect Jon is now to be depicted as older than he was in the books.

(And don't forget that his close shaves come rather later in the story. ;):))

Heh, Lord Snow, that's exactly my beef with Jon too -- that facial hair, there's something about it not quite Jon.

However, am liking the casting for King Robert -- is odd to see the guy from Full Monty, but I think he definitely looks the part. Also like Dany, she looks good, too.

It might be a tad early for Jon to have facial hair, but didn't Robb have the beginnings of a beard in ACOK? It's certainly not unreasonable that Jon could have some hair on his face, although I admit i've never pictured him with any.

Not sure if it's just that particular photo, but every time I see the pic of Jon with Bran, I'm reminded of Orlando Bloom. Does anyone else see this, or am I just weird? (This is the one I'm talking about)

PS Love the new one of Tyrion with the shield here. It really gives you some perspective on just how tall (or not) Peter Dinklage is!

A full 60-second trailer for the series.

Some great stuff there. We get to see the first changes from the pilot, with them darkening Alfie Allan's hair so he much more resembles Theon from the books and the person being executed is Will, not Gared as in the books and in the unaired pilot. We also get some dialogue from Eddard, Bran, Cersei and Robert.

Oh yeah, you also get to see Tyrion smacking Joffrey around. Score!

Re : Jon's casting not being Stark-ish ebough... maybe the producers know something we dont... or may have only speculated on... :)

Also I think most of the children characters will be portrayed a few years older for the tv version.

^^ R M Tobias said it.
All the children characters are made older in the TV adaption...hence Daenerys also looks a tad bit too old, darn!!!

That trailer looks good. Not many really epic things in it, but I guess that means it'll be a nice surprise. I'm glad they put a lot of effort into the casting - it looks like it's paid off.

I think I wet myself when I saw the trailer.

Sean Bean is great. Mark Addy is great. There is even a snapshot of Dany and her handmaiden. But the look on my Giant of a Lannister's face when he gets taken in the inn by Catelyn, AWESOME!

I liked the trailer; I'll be waiting eagerly for the DVD.

* Wonders if TK is going to get a commode in time for the series broadcasts. *

I got goosebumps watching that trailer. No exaggeration.

For those who have listened to the audiobooks, doesn't Addy's Robert sound very much like Dotrice's?

I'm so psyched for this. It's going to be amazing.

That was pretty awesome. I can't wait. I'm still not buying Dany, unfortunately, but everything else looks brilliant.
Even though it's HBO, I think that there were lines they couldn't cross. Casting an actress that was actually Dany's age would have either made it impossible to shoot much of what happens with Drogo in AGOT or, they would have had do do a lot of "impled', offscreen sex.

I also wish that every character could be as I imagined them in the book, but i think in this case they made a wise choice in modifying the charcter. When you think about it, her age really doesn't matter all that much. The essence of her character will hopefully come through.

If there was any doubt Peter Dinklage was not fit for the role, that teaser destroyed it. I absolutely agree with TK, the look on his face was worth 3 pages of dialogue.

This clip has me wishing I had a fast forward button for time, I can barely stand to wait.

I know how you feel, Peter Dinkledge is great casting, but for some reason I pictured Tyrione with a beard.

Oh, I have absolutely no qualms about changing her age - I fully agree with that. I just don't buy the look. I don't know, everything and everyone else looks so believable and so much a part of this world, but she looks like a dressed-up actress, something out of Xena: Warrior Princess - a little cheap and nasty. I'm hoping prolonged exposure in the series, as opposed to these fleeting glimpses mostly out of context (we don't see a lot of the settings she inhabits, for instance), changes my perceptions.

Conor - I think Tyrion grows his beard after he is wounded, to cover some of the scars.

In the following, I'm assuming Dany's mode of dress is post-marriage.

It's a while since I read AGOT, but I recall thinking (when reading her early chapters) that Dany was being sold off to finance (and otherwise support) Viserys's attempt to regain the throne of Westeros. In spite of her royal heritage, she was being treated as no better than chattel. The clothes we see in the still are perhaps meant to reinforce this impression: she does indeed look like someone wearing inapproriate clothing: inappropriate because she is heir, after Viserys, to a large and wealthy kingdom and yet she has been traded to what we were initially meant to see as no better than a horde of coarse barbarians.

(Unless they use voice-overs, TV and film directors have to use other signs to suggest what their audience is meant to be thinking, whereas authors can simply tell - as well as show ;) - their readers what their characters are thinking.)

The fact she chose to wear the clothing (or lack thereof) of the Dothraki like a painted vest was something Viserys said made her look like a savage. She also had much more foresight than her brother had in his pinky.

I also noticed in one of those "making of the series" videos that the actress has an english accent. How will that mesh with Sean Bean's accent or Peter Dinklage's american accent remains to be seen.
