Casting news from the TV series

They're going to eff up everything with poor casting decisions and the entire series will be complete ruination! Run for the hills!

I think the best way to enjoy this series, is to forget the books to some extent. Judge it on its own merits.:)

It will be interesting to see how close it is to what we imagined the books to be. There will be lots of fodder for discussion. But in the end, it will be extremely difficult to do the same thing in a TV format.

I enjoyed the Rome series. I loved the little touches of historical detail. It was big budget and meticulous in atmospheric qualities. However, I know I had to let go of such things as Caesar's actual appearance, according to statues, and accuracy with female characters, in particular. Focussing on fictional characters was clever of them. They made it such fun, instead of the show being a cautious documentary.

This series is probably not going to be a documentary of the books, and may be the better for it. But who knows!

(GRRM) TV Series casting news

Until the GRRM forum is fixed, I'll post this news here then.

Multiple sources (including GRRM's UK publisher although their source is not listed) are saying that Sean Bean (Boromir in LotR, 006 in GoldenEye, Richard Sharpe in Sharpe) has been cast by HBO in the role of Eddard Stark.

No word from GRRM, HBO, the BBC or other official sources as yet. A couple of people involved have interestingly said, "No comment," rather than, "No, that's not right," as they did with previous incorrect casting rumours, so I think this is a more reliable piece of news than most.

Re: (GRRM) TV Series casting news

I do like Sean Bean. I wouldn't have thought of him right away for Eddard, but I think he'll do a nice job.

Re: (GRRM) TV Series casting news

The forum's working again, huzzah!

Can a moderator move this thread over or combine it with the announced casting thread? Cheers.

Sean Bean will be good as Eddard. He's a name, not a huge name, but a name people are familiar with. The masses will be ticked when he.... oops, I almost spilled the, uh, you know.

He.

I told my mum about this news tonight, resulting in an approximate 1000% rise in her interest in the project. She immediately asked how often Ned takes his shirt off, which I must admit was a question I've never considered before, and swiftly moved the conversation onto different ground.

Actually, Eddard and Catelyn engage in marital relations just before Luwin brings them Lyssa's message. Both of them should appear topless in that scene... mayhaps bottomless as well. Mayhaps the ladies will see Sean's beans.

Bahahaha!

At first for some reason my eyes read 'Edmure'. I thought that would be a bit strange. Now I know it's Eddard I really hope that it's true.

It's official, GRRM says Sean Bean is Ned! I love it! Not only that, he made it official that...

Mark Addy will be Robert Baratheon, untitled picture
Kit Harrington is Jon, untitled picture
Jack Gleeson will be Joffrey, http://www.filmdope.com/Gallery/ActorsG/58178-26622.gif
Harry Lloyd will be Viserys, http://www.bbc.co.uk/nottingham/content/images/2007/10/19/episode3_series2_02_470x313.jpg

I don't know much about these actors but I really like the look of Jon, apparently he's an unknown. Its exactly how I'd think Jon would look like. Jack Gleeson was the little kid in Batman Begins that Batman gave his crazy goggles to outside the window and who Katie Holmes was trying to protect at the end. Keep in mind Jack Gleeson's picture is four years older, kids can look a lot different during that time.

Holy moley, I say my wish and it comes true a minute later! Thanks Bazza!

Man I sure could go for a million dollars *waits expectantly*

It's official! GRRM says Hilarious Joke has won a million dollars!!!

Ha ha ha ha ha! Well, he of all people should know I suppose.

Robert, Jon, Joffrey and Viserys all look good (I just google imaged search Harry Lloyd). Now I'm thirsty for more! Maybe I should invest some of my money into speeding this project along a bit.

## Thar be possible spoilers - b'ware! ##

Now, I really don't want to be a nay-sayer on all this casting business; these guys look great. But I do have one reservation... Mark Addy as Robert Baratheon? Seriously? The guy from the Tesco adverts? ...seriously?

I can see him quite masterfully pulling off the 'jovial drinking-and-wenching Robert', but the 'brooding, send-a-man-to-kill-a-pregnant-teen, crushed-Rhaegar's-chest-at-the-Battle-of-the-Trident Robert'?

This is some time after Robert's prime, admittedly, but he is supposed to be 15 years off being one of Westeros' most physically imposing warriors. At the start of the series, I pictured him as still being able to lick Ned in a brawl if it came to it (assuming he wasn't falling down drunk). I'm just not feeling it. From what I've seen Addy in previously, he tends to play the 'lovable buffoon'. Whilst this is certainly sometimes relevant to Robert's character, it's one small aspect.

For me, Robert is one half 'laughing joy' and one half 'brooding rage' and I only see one of these in Addy. Please can someone convince me otherwise? Cheers.

Isn't the point of being good/great actor to be able to play a role so convincingly so that the viewer believes that it's "really you"? I'm not talking about run of the mill actors such as Kevin Costner, ones that play "themselves" in every role, but someone along the lines of a Dustin Hoffman, Johnny Depp or Marlon Brando. Actors that can transform themselves into someone totally different from whom they really are. I'll trust that when this guy read for the part he was able to give them everything that they were looking for and we won't be disappointed.
