re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

First time I've watched the "new Doctor Who" series since about halfway through series 1 when I threw my hands up in disgust at Russell T Davies (took me ages before I realised what RTD meant) and his hammy, plot-holed filled scripts.

So I'm probably not best placed to comment on how it compares to more recent entries but I was relieved to see a little less "Ooo cor blimey!" cockney geezer characters and Eastenders level sets. So it was slightly better to see some old familiar faces like Sarah Jane & Bernard Cribbins book-ending the episodes. And bringing back the Master & Timelords was nice too. They're much more threatening and disquieting foes than aliens or daleks. They are, after all, dark reflections of the Doctor himself and just as intelligent & skilled so it was nice to see him properly challenged.

So that was the 'good' I suppose. The 'bad' was the weird superpowers displayed by the Master (and his incessant "evil" laughing) and the 'ugly' was the numerous ripoffs from other shows - like the scene in the 2nd episode when they shot down the missiles on route to the Palace...or Millenium Falcon vs Tie Fighters in Star Wars as I saw it. And yes, lots of plotholes and odd loose ends (what was the point of Donna at all in this special?) that made no sense.

Having said that, as I had low expectations I thought it was generally ok, despite Tennant's gurning at key moments :)

I wanted the space ship to dive into the ocean (surely it could do that??) The cruise missiles wouldn't be able to follow (as their propulsion requires Oxygen.) There didn't seem to be an explanation of how they managed to get away.

All of which goes to prove RTD has watched as much Sci-Fi as we have. He regards himself as a Doctor Who aficionado. It is just that what he remembers is slightly different to what I remember.

I do think you need to watch this along with the target audience to appreciate it on the different levels it plays. I noted that High Eight mentioned the Draco Tavern. Bar scene stories are as old as Sci-Fi itself, but my son thought it was Mos Eisley and I expect most kids would only relate to that. What I personally wanted to know was why has the Doctor never been there? Surely that would be the ideal place for him?

The Doctor doesn't mingle. He's a loner. Only loners that want company go to bars. :D

Are you suggesting Ensign Ro went to ten forward hoping to get laid?

Be a brave man...:D

And because she is still cute, perhaps the brave men go to her.

As for the Doctor -- we have seen that the interior of the Tardis is so vast, and full of so many unexpected rooms, for all we know there could be a saloon full of drunken cowboys and easy women tucked away in some odd corner. Why go out if you have everything you need at home?

If at least 2/3 of those were true, I could probably get my hubby to watch the show with me.

;)

And some of us scaredy cats, too, I'd wager :)

That's something they never thought of putting in a Lexus.

Knowing my luck, I'd end up with the Saloon and the drunken Cowboys. And probably the Dallas Cowboys at that.

You mean there's 400 years of Sylvester McCoy we haven't seen yet? Oh, goody :)

No No................. Please No!!!!!!

Saw part two last night and I enjoyed it, I liked the revisiting the old characters again and being a big Captain Jack fan it was nice to see him in there.
Matt Smith looks interesting (from what you can guage from just a short appereance) Looking forward to the new doctor...

Bonnie Langford was my favourite companion, too :D (need to go, now, have - appointment -- with great -- white --- tuba ...)

I just finished watching Part Two. I was Quite surprised to see Mickey there with Martha at the end. I wonder what happened to the guy who gave her the diamond engagement ring -- I guess she threw him over for the "fascinating" Mickey.

Although, just that little bit we saw of him, he looked more interesting than all the time he was on the show.

I always wished they would explore more of the Tardis, it was always one of my favorite parts growing up when they wandered from room to room. I seem to remember some people getting lost in it because all the rooms looked the same. Maybe that was why he redecorated.

I enjoyed the end of the series but it's sad to see David Tennant go. The new guy is going to have to work hard to prove himself.

There was one episode in particular (The Invasion of Time) when they are chased by Sontarans through the TARDIS and you see all kinds of rooms and corridors.

On the falling from a great height with only a scratch to show - Tom Baker only fell off a radio telescope and had to regenerate afterwards.

I'm not sure I liked the special effects fueled TARDIS destruction as a part of his regeneration either. I remember that his regeneration used to only require 'a bit of a lie down', often in a special "Zero Room" but other times just on the floor. Maybe it is all because he is getting younger and is now in better health!

Regarding his age, he states to Wilfred Mott he is 906 years old. That has been consistent throughout the 2005-2010 series:

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

I have to give RTD a little credit for this, Dave. This regeneration was so completely unlike any other - in this, he was slowly dying, the death was an inevitability, not and instantaneous thing. And was containing an immense amount of radiated energy that had to be released first. So for the first time there was an opportunity to be both boring (revisiting all his old friends) and dramatic (zapping the Tardis).
