The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

I was looking up stuff about River Song the other day and it seems that one of the episodes in the new series is going to concentrate on one of the things she mentioned to the tenth doctor (the crash of Byzantium I think it was?)

I watched the regeneration again earlier and I found myself smiling when Matt Smith appeared and started doing his little thing. I think I might actually be warming to him. I think, as much as I did truly love Mr Tennant, this big change might get me back into the series...I've hardly watched much Doctor Who this year (I know there wasn't much, but I was losing heart by last Christmas).

As to Sally Sparrow, and in the same vein as Mary...was I the only one who wasn't that taken by her? Not enough to become a companion, anyway, as some people were suggesting. Loved the episode, of course, though.

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

Russell Tovey was in Little Dorrit as John Chivery

Little Dorrit!! Yes, that was where I saw him. Not quite so recently as I thought, because that was several months ago.

Mary, a lot of people who can't stand Catherine Tate as a general rule liked her very much indeed as the role of Donna developed. The Donna who appears in "The End of Time" is a throw-back to the person she was at the beginning of the series, and not representative of the way she handled the role throughout (the character went through an enormous amount of personal growth). If you get another chance to watch some of those episodes you might be pleasantly surprised.

I'm also an artificially red-haired female. (Well, less of the red now ...)

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

I'm also an artificially red-haired female.

There must be a few of us around, then!

Well, I've slid back to what I believe is my natural brown colour now...

And I second that about Catherine Tate, she was an excellent companion (my personal favourite). Especially as there wasn't any love interest getting in the way of her and the Doctor.

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

And what would be wrong with being a woman or ginger? RTD would never have let him look at his hands and say "still White" would he?

Mary (artificial redhead and woman!)
As someone who is still vaguely red-headed - okay, I admit it, I've gone almost completely blond (not blonde and not artificially, I might add) - I'm still feeling relieved that the villain in The Day of the Triffids was not portrayed as being red-headed (as he was, apparently, in the book). Although come to think of it, Torrance did seem to have a certain regard for Sir Winston....

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

As someone with a brother who's red-headed ... ermmm ... sorry, I forgot where I was going with this ...

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

There's a fair few about these days. Artificial redheads I mean

Odd that you should have many of them in the UK where it's not considered a desirable color. It is over here. Back in the days when mine was only a shade or two darker than Catherine Tate's people used to compliment me effusively on the color. That was nice to hear, but would have been nicer if it was actually mine. Any one of them could have gone to the supermarket and bought the same color.

I wonder if Tate's was that red when she was younger. By her age, it ought to be fading, so it must be ... assisted.

To return to the topic, a ginger-haired Doctor would be a fine idea, although I can't think of any specific candidates. And the new companion has red hair, so in spite of the "still not ginger" remark I think the producers must be quite in favor of red hair after all ... at least on women.

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

As previously suggested, the ginger is a self-referential quip to the last regeneration, when (I assume) it was merely a nod/dig at companion's actress's real-life former boyfriend (Chris Evans)....?

I really didn't like Donna when she first appeared (although I had no opinion on Catherine Tate, as I'd never heard of her before she was on Who). But as the character grew, I grew to like her more and more. Much more than I ever liked Martha...although I guess I'm one of the few who liked the fact that she eventually ended up with Mickey (who is clearly no longer Mickey the Idiot, thank goodness).

I'm also quite looking forward to Eleven now. Between the post-regenratrion scene and the preview BBCAmerica showed, I'm more convinced now that Matt Smith will be a proper Doctor.

And, I was very sorry to see David Tennant go, for all that I resented him for awhile at the beginning of his turn as the Doctor, just for not being Nine, who is "my" Doctor.

EDITED to fix stupid spelling, as it's past midnight here now, and I've been awake since 5:30 this morning.

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

Yes, I think I might give the last series another chance and hope to overcome my dislike of Tate. I think I also said "David" instead of "Patrick" Troughton (David is his son).

I loved Christopher Eccleston and it took me a long time to accept David Tennant. Then I grew to like him and soon afterwards he became really annoying - "Very Doctor!" indeed!

So we'll see with Matt Smith. And the scripts should improve now.

But I agree with whoever said they thought Alonso had goe down with the Titanic but that was such an awful Christmas Special (Kylie Minogue!) that I don't remember it well. "Allons-y, Alonso" is the only line I remember.

I too was pleased to see Captain Jack (I went over to the dark side, i.e. Torchwood, when I stopped watching DW).

And I got the ginger being self-referential - it was the self-referentialness I couldn't stand! Chris Evans was Billie Piper's husband, btw, and she has a much more interesting one now - Laurence Fox.

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

You know, I would have liked it a bit more if the Doctor would have faced his end not so much as a whiny cry baby. I mean, really now!

I did not like Donna because she was a whiner, too. No wonder they were best friends!!!

So as far as the plot/timeline thing...........I just don't know. I was not thrilled with the ending. Not because it was sad, but because of all the whole entire culture of Gallifrey, the most ridiculously huge and powerful culture in ALL of time except perhaps for the super hardy Daleks, only three time lords stood against the president, and one of them was shot dead dead dead. But perhaps that underlined what the Doc was saying even more anyways, that Gallifrey's people had gone mad from the makings of their own hell. What I don't get is that if you could go back in time and make a link like that, why wouldn't you just go back in time and kill the Doctor as an infant? Or imprison him? I mean, in the end they were going to kill the doctor anyways, so what really was the point? And how in the name of all that is time lordish could 'Gallifrey Rise' if it was just bringing about the end of time anyways?

I did like the creepy seer vision lady. She was pretty cool.

I was a little put out that with all of that nonsense, the Doctor actually did not die. He just regenerated. And what a crappy take back with the Ood guy all 'this song is ending but the story is not'

Bah humbug. He's 900 years old. Kill him already. For pete's sakes.

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

All I can say is: Thank goodness Russel T. Davis is having no more to do with the show. After watching these, I was almost at the point of thinking that I don't ever want to watch Dr. Who again. But given how much is changing I'll stick with it.

Pretty much my exact thoughts. Other people on here have lauded the Stephen Moffat episodes as the best so I have high hopes now that RTD is out of the picture. I'll be prepared to give it a fresh start anyway.

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

I was slightly annoyed with the final two DT episodes, I thought the whole starwars shooting down missiles thing was a bit of a rip off, and how on Earth would wilfred be any good at using a joystick, he's a grand dad, with a middle aged grand daughter, he wont know how to use a joystick properly! (sorry to all those Granddads out there that can, all 3 of you!)
What about the woman who was the doctors lover, that he met at her end in an episode, the library one, she was all like in love and stuff and knew his real name, but that would have been a different doctor!
What happened to the master? not sure where he went
I can't believe the stupid multiple cocking gun, and how many times did he have to turn around, that was rubbish, I could have told you after the first two turns that he wasn't going to shoot either one of them.
I'm not an expert in alien planet atmospheres but gallifrey looked a bit too big, and didn't have any oceans, so where is all the breathable air? Just silly. And yes why wasn't there more disaster when a planet larger than our own suddenly appears almost in our atmosphere! Crickey.
The whole sentimental goodbye thing was a bit silly, was the guy in the bar with Jack from before he went on the titanic? I thought the bar was Mos Eisley (though I am only in my 30s)
It seemed a bit silly, the Dr saved Sarah Jane's boy from being run over
Saved Martha and Mickey from the alien
Pulled for Jack
and said hello to Rose, hmmm.
How, how how did he survive the fall from the ship, smashing through a glass ceiling and hitting the floor, that's just not on! Come on, he was free falling for ages, he must have reached his terminal velocity, maybe Time lords are like cats, if you drop them from high enough they survive, he could have used his coat as a gliding parachute/pair of wings!

I did like the knock four times thing, but wasn't it more like 16 times? 4 x 4?

Ok, ok, I'm sorry, ranting too much, I watched it and will continue to watch DW for the foreseeable future, lets hope the sci-fi gets a little harder (or more concrete)

:)

Hey Moonbat, if he has his wrist brace on, my dad (a grandpa of 8 soon to be 10) can own you at any shooting game. Even Resident Evil on the Wii, but esp Duck Hunt and Hogans Heroes and Missile Command.

The falling part didn't bother me too much. People have fallen:

Wiki article:

Surviving falls

JAT stewardess Vesna Vulović survived a fall of 33,000 feet (10,000 m)[4]JAT Flight 367. The plane was brought down by explosives over Srbská Kamenice in the former Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic). The Serbian stewardess suffered a broken skull, three broken vertebrae (one crushed completely), and was in a coma for 27 days. In an interview she commented that, according to the man who found her, "...I was in the middle part of the plane. I was found with my head down and my colleague on top of me. One part of my body with my leg was in the plane and my head was out of the plane. A catering trolley was pinned against my spine and kept me in the plane. The man who found me, says I was very lucky. He was with Hitler's troops as a medic during the War. He was German. He knew how to treat me at the site of the accident." [5] on January 26, 1972 when she was aboard
In World War II there were several reports of military aircrew surviving long falls: Nick Alkemade, Alan Magee, and Ivan Chisov all fell at least 5,500 metres (18,000 ft) and survived.
Freefall is not to be confused with individuals who survive instances of various degrees of controlled flight into terrain. Such impact forces affecting these instances of survival differ from the forces which are characterized by free fall.
It was reported that two of the victims of the Lockerbie bombing survived for a brief period after hitting the ground (with the forward nose section fuselage in freefall mode), but died from their injuries before help arrived.[6]
A skydiver from Staffordshire plunged 6,000ft without a parachute in Russia and survived to tell the tale. James Boole, from Tamworth, said he was supposed to have been given a signal by another skydiver to open his parachute, but it came two seconds too late. Mr Boole, who was filming the other skydiver for a television documentary, landed on snow-covered rocks and suffered a broken back and rib. [7]

So I figure a Time Lord can too....

:p

But I'm with you on the rest of it. And whats with all the goodbyes, I mean doesn't he regenerate anyways???????????????

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

I'm pretty sure that the Doctor wasn't in a coma for 27 seconds let alone 27 days, although that might have made for a more interestng final episode.

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

I'd forgotten about those appalling cactus make-up jobs.

Were they RTD's nod towards some of the more ludicrous "aliens" from earlier decades of the show? (I'd give names, buit those brain cells of mine that held that information have self-destructed.)

The Cactacae from Bas-Lag? Perhaps RTD reads China Mieville.

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

Hehe, I'm just reading The Scar now. Quite enjoy it. I didn't mind the cactus men, to be honest. They could also be based on... whatever the villainous enemy of Desperate Dan was called.

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

I tend to cut a lot of slack for almost any alien design, but even I have to wonder - if their heads are spikey .... ?

A tailor's nightmare, I suspect.
