The official ADWD "Pick the Announcement Date" thread

I bet I've checked the ASOIAF Update Page over a thousand times over the last four years. I'm always hoping I'll be the first one to see the words "The Dance is done." You know you've done it, too.

So... I'd like to propose a complementary contest to picking the correct date. How about we guess who will be the first to bear the good news here... huh? Who will be our herald to call us to the Dance? Will it be me? Will it be Cul? Will it be TK or Bear? Or will some oldtimer come back with the announcement... AryaUnderfoot, TreyGreyjoy, or Aegon?

Since I hate starting new threads when I think an existing one is still good, I'm starting this contest here. Then we can easily see both the picks for the date and the herald.

I know you're thinking, "Boaz, you're nuts. (But you were already thinking that, so I don't care.) Werthead will bring us the good news first... he always does." I cannot fault you for thinking that way. Picking the winner here is analogous to the Professional Golfer's Association tournaments over the last decade. Oddsmakers would take the bet "Who will win... Tiger Woods or anyone else?" Think of it... one guy was even money against the field.

Will you play smart and pick Wert, the overwhelming favorite, or will you go out on a limb and select Imp, Kiwi, ss, HJ, Clanny, Illifer, Syphon, Eulalia, viz, or someone else?

I'm pretty sure Wert will be the first one here with the official announcement, but I'm still picking.............. myself to win.
 
Wert has been beaten to the punch the last few times there were major announcements. I'll go with Boaz to announce it first.

It won't be me for sure...I don't ever check GRRM's site. I consider myself an ASOIAF fan more than a GRRM fan. I get all of my information right here on these forums!
 
The smart money is on Wert, but I think there will be a few factors that come into play. Two, anyway.

If GRRM gives us incremental updates on Not A Blog and reaches the point where the book is done except for a few pages of the epilogue and sending it to the publlisher, I think anyone could then be the winner, since everyone will constantly be checking Not A Blog and the ADWD update page for the "official" announcement.

If GRRM just announces out of the clear blue, say later today, my 3 choices would bethe one person that usually posts stuff first- Wert, and the 2 people i know that check regularly for updates- Me and Boaz.

I'll say this. If I am the one to announce it to this forum, it's getting it's own thread. I'm NOT posting to the ADWD update thread :D
 
Anything to not bring Cul's excoriation upon my reputa... uh, my good nam.... uh... upon me.
 
So I don't mean to influence anyone's votes, but I might write a little program that watches for changes to the update page and automatically posts here when it does change. Maybe. Just saying.
 
Hunh... You guys make me look exactly like the Luddite that I am.
 
Um...I guess I'll go for Chairface or Murphy then, though the phrase, "it's a shitty way to win" springs to mind. Dean Martin, I think.

And Ursa - I think you're onto something. Martin should announce the release with a thousand ravens taking to the air, each carrying the message, "The Dance is done. Spread the word." It'd probably be the least cost-effective marketing ploy ever used, but who'd forget it? And then, when the seventh book is finished, he can release a few dragons.:)
 
It's worth remembering that I'm in the UK, so if GRRM makes the announcement fairly late in the day local time (when I'm in bed six hours behind), I'll miss out on the opportunity to spread the news ;)
 
Does anyone know how the announcement about A Feast For Crow's publication date was made?

Yes. It was not exactly subtle.

GRRM put up a huge 20-point-font thing on his ASoIaF Update page saying "IT'S DONE!!!"

This was then followed by a gargantuam .jpg of the cover to A Feast for Crows.

This was to let people know that A Feast for Crows was, in fact, done.

Right at the bottom, in tiny normal writing was a link saying "(Sort of)", which led to another update explaining the whole 'book split' situation.

I'd expect something similar this time around, except it may be on his Notablog before the website (as GRRM can update his Notablog instantly but has to rely on his webmaster to be available to update his website).

(Well no more "sort of" than what we already suspect: that some chapters will be shipped to the next, already planned, book.)
 
Hahaha well your consistent checking of the ASOIAF site is in my mind reminiscent of Sisyphus, except you didn't do anything wrong!
