Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Just to let everyone know, we've belatedly realised one of the stories posted was over word count, so we've had to remove it from consideration -- it's no longer in either the Challenge thread or the poll. Sorry we didn't notice this before. Fortunately (for me doing this, not for the poor member, obviously) the story hadn't attracted any votes as yet, so it hasn't skewed those figures.

Phew. Right then...

T.E. --- I am stunned! I never expected so much of a mention on that story. I am so pleased that you liked it!

Parson has said it for me T.E and very graciously too. Thanks on two counts then: one for the mention and another to you and the other mods for setting up the 300 word challenge and it's - golly - prize!

I wish I'd put more effort into it now...

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Thanks for the votes, Arkose, Brev and GreenKidx.

Well my 'short list' is down to 13. I find judging much harder than the 75 word challenge. Not only are the entries longer and therefore take longer to read, but the extra length allows more 'depth' to each story and so needs more consideration to do them justice.

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

I've got it down to 5 honourable mentions and 5 for a shortlist. It's taken three sessions to get this far, and will take another to discover my top three. Now I worry that having to do it in sessions means I wasn't consistent between them, and my decisions were based on different moods, states of hunger etc. at different times.

And I figured out whose wordcount went over 300. Commiserations to you, sir.

Before anyone else panics, the member has been notified privately -- I'm not quite so callous as to announce it here and leave it at that!

It was brutal at the end but, the three votes went to :-

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Ok, so tonight was my first proper read through, and I've ended up with an initial shortlist of 30. This is much harder than the 75 worder, which I'd already believed to be hard enough!

I agree with Mosaix that the extra words provide richer stories which are harder to decide against. I think there will be a few more sessions before I get the list down to 3.

*Edit - I've just realised that I've got a totally unexpected vote!! Thank you very much Brev!*

Bloody hell Mother; I've got a vote. It's my first recognition since flopping my English GCE nearly 35 years ago:) Good job I didn't hold me breath or I'd be dead now:eek:

Glad Boneman got one also, I like his story to. I've got a short list of 43 and I hope to whittle it down to 42 by the weekend.

Can I pay anyone else to vote?

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Oh my goodness, I hadn't even gotten in here for one thank-you, and now I have three to do!

Thank you Boneman, TEIN and Teresa for the votes! And thank you and thank you!

Gary, I think it's been whittled to 42 for you, so there's a load off your mind (well, technically it already was, since you can't vote for yourself, and now it would be 41). I haven't figured out who's missing yet, but condolences.

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

My pleasure Arkose. My method isn't scientific. I just read through them all and if something stays with me until the end, I vote for it. Hence ... three did and yours was one of them. Good luck.

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Thank you so much to Allanon, Anne Martin, Greenkidx, slack and TEIN who voted for my story. Started the day on a downer when I found out my cat is ill, and refusing to come out from under a very thick hedge (do I call the vet, or just make sure a supply of water is there for him? Did the latter, once I was sure he hadn't been hit by a car, as he did this before...but it's very worrying) and then checked in to find those lovely votes, which really made my day.

Innit great having three votes? Makes it three times less difficult* to choose...

*ps: I was going to say 'easier' but it didn't fit with the tough choices we have to make!!

My not so short list is:

Gary Compton, Teresa, Mouse, Parson, Cornelius, Nixie, moonbat, TJ, Hoopy, TDZ, Ursa, Stormfeather, Precise Calibre and Cul.

I know two of the three I'm voting for, but trying to make up my mind about the third...

Thanks to Allanon for the vote, and to those who mentioned mine, as always greatly appreciated.

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Thanks you for the short-listings, Allanon and Perpetual Man. And thanks for the votes, Anne and Brev!

I'm still nowhere near ready to vote, though I know HareBrain's piece will definitely be on my short short-list -- I was forcibly reminded of his mirror-man when I came across this TS Eliot (Four Quartets) quote at the weekend: "humankind cannot bear very much reality".

(Co-incidentally, or perhaps not, the quote came in an article reviewing a book by Jan Karski, the man who revealed the truth of the Holocaust during the war, but who was ignored by the Allies, not least because they couldn't believe it to be true.)

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Goshdarnit, but my previous piece listing my shortlist and finalists ain't here! Which makes my comment about 'three votes making it less difficult to choose' quite superfluous... I realise I must have gone over the time-limit in posting, and rushed away after pressing the 'submit reply'... So here it is again, minus whatever comments I made previously, but it went something like this:

300 word stories should be easier to decide between, than 75, shouldn't they? If only... My shortlist is almost half the entries!!!

Gary Compton
Alchemist
SJAB
Talysia
Mosaix
Sapheron
Mouse
Aun Doorback
Anne Martin
Slack
TEIN
Arkose
Nixie
MoonBat
The Dusty Zebra
The Judge
Harebrain
GreenKidx
Allanon
Cul

Twenty!! And it was difficult to sort those from the others anyway. Either you lot stop writing such great stories, or I'll have to choose an absurd criteria other than 'that-was-a-terrific-story-that-I-really-enjoyed'. The varied breadth of the stories was so imaginative, it was even more difficult to choose from those...

So my finalists were as follows: (I wanted to get it to 5 or 6, but just couldn't!)

Gary Compton
Alchemist
Mosaix
Sapheron
Mouse
Anne Martin
TEIN
Nixie
The Dusty Zebra
The Judge

That's ten!!!

But, luckily, we have three votes... So I only had to choose again...

Mosaix
Mouse
The Dusty Zebra

Phew! Dare I say it - I'm glad this is only happening every three months:eek:

Happy Star Wars Day! May the fourth be with you....

Thanks, Judge. I didn't have the Eliot line in mind when I wrote it, but it expresses very well what I was hoping to get across.

I have a shortlist of four at the moment, based on memories of reading first time around. Be interesting to see what happens on a reread.

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Thanks for the mention P. M. It seems you always judge my stories kindly, which must make you at least first cousin to a saint.:D

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Thanks Teresa, Allanon, & Boneman for the mentions. :)

I do hope he's not very poorly -- perhaps it's just he's heard all the talk on the 75-worder discussion thread, so he's staying put until all the ailurophobes there have written their stories...

And thanks for the short-listing!
