Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Doesn't it depend, a bit, on how it's used?

(Actually, 'wide-eyed' is probably reasonably safe wherever it is in a sentence, but there may be other examples where the hyphen isn't really appropriate everywhere in a sentence** and so the combination would be two words. I'm only saying this in case other entries contain a combination of words and position in a sentence that aren't so obviously okay. Basically, it's always safer to ask the mods beforehand.)

** - If my mind was working a bit better, I'd give some examples. :(

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

It passes the dictionary test, and it's certainly appropriate the way the slack uses it in his story.

****

And my last post was hurried -- I had limited time online, and I was checking those dictionaries, too -- so I didn't get a chance to say thank you to Perp, GreenKidx, and Parson for your kind words.

And Parson, are you trying to figure out the symbolism of my story, or my avatar?

Already the competition looks like it is going to be fierce, there are so many fine entries.

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

It's 1.35 am, and I've been sitting outside my two year old's door for an hour as he refuses to go to sleep. Instead he leaves his room at ten minute intervals.

Still, I've used the time well. I've typed my 3rd story. I may not use it, as the definition of robot is questionable. My 2nd is more fantasy than SF, and it shares almost an entire line with Christian's. At least I'm happy with my first, and I've researched a couple of story issues on the internet. And typed another 200 words of my WIP.

Damn, I'm tired.

I tip my hat. I am having troubles writing anything with just a full time job. It might have to do with the fact I work from 6am-2:30pm Friday-Tuesday and not use to the early morning schedule ATM. Since i spend so much time driving though I have been through 4 books in about a month.

Heck this challenge was tough for me.

Two year olds eh? Who'd have 'em?

Well us obviously. :)

Perp jr. Was up through the night after having a nightmare with a man in his wall.

Thinks I, at least he'll sleep on in the morning...

6am "Daddy!"

Sigh, but it is in those strange hours, when your brain does seem to come up with some weird ideas...

Up all hours? Ah , now we know why you're Perpetual Man!

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Ah, but this is the benefit of being an oldish codger.

Mine are 25 and 23 so I can sleep for England, occasionally having an afternoon nap, just to top up the energies if you know what I mean.

I do remember with fondness, the terrible two's:eek:

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

And some of us are yet to have any :)
After a mammoth weekend, driving from Surrey to Devon on Friday night (arriving a little before 11:00pm) then up at 7:00 to drive an hour before spending 6 hours looking round a total of 10 houses, then 2 more hours drive to see Jools Holland at Ragley hall, then driving another two hours home, but thankfully I slept into till way past 10:00am this morning.

Already some very good entries, Platty's was stand out, and I liked Johnny's friend. Also was shocked to see TE entering so early, next thing you know it'll be Culhwch entering before the end of the first week!!!

At which point most of us will have collective heart failure, thinking we've missed the deadline!

At which point I'll know I'm still fast asleep and having a rather disturbing dream.

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

A friend of mine suggested that I make a comment about my story because he didn't get it at all.

The "edit" at the bottom of my entry is counted as part of the 75 words.

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

I'm surprised - and was almost tempted to do it myself - that no one has presented their story along these lines:

011011100100101101...etc :D

Or, to count as words to fill the "75" one, zero, one, one, zero, one... etc etc el oh el

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

That might be okay for the odd word or two :)rolleyes:), but I imagine that readers seeing a story all of which is presented in binary might very well say: "On-off is enough." ;):)

I actually have a story done and dusted and waiting to post. Whether I do post it before the last day is another matter entirely, of course...

I actually thought about using a site to convert my story into binary. Sadly common sense prevailed when one of my shorter and shall we say more pathetic WIP pieces ended up filling up a large scrollable chunk of screen real-estate.

I thought the same thing, then converted Perpetual Man and thought errr maybe not.

My story is just about ready to go up but....

I've had to remove one word (it was the only remaining word that I deemed expendable) but now am not so sure that I like the story without it.

And just to really throw another tangle in I've got a vague idea for another story I want to play with. Might be the first time in an age I don't post a story in the first week.

And I've got to start commenting (which I normally only do after I post my story), with the rate the stories are coming in, I'm going to be swamped!

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Oooh, double post. Not that too close together though...

As this month is rather busy (at least to start with) I'm going to be posting the comments as and when I can do them, possibly one or two at a time.

Hopefully I'll pick up speed toward the end of the time period.

As always I'll do my best to post positive comments throughout, and if I miss anyone it's by accident, so give me a yell!

01000001 01110010 01101011 01101111 01110011 01100101 00100000 (Arkose) - A rather maudlin start to the month, that recalled, for me at least the end of the steam locomotive era. It’s kind of sad to see something pass away into the anals of history as happens here, and the tone has been caught well.

01010100 01101000 01100101 00100000 01010011 01110000 01110101 01110010 01110010 01101001 01101110 01100111 00100000 01010000 01101100 01100001 01110100 01110100 01111001 (The Spurring Platty) – If there is anything sadder than the passing of a moment of technological history, it could well be this, the last testament of a race that has been eradicated by themselves. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that the Robot’s Tale here is not told, but is of tantamount important to the story. Excellent

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Since there's a robot operating on me on the fourteenth perhaps I should have waited and tried to get an interview – not that I'll be in the optimum position for asking questions.

I hate rhyming couplets, and while the prelude is mostly in iambic pentameter, sometimes it's hexameter. Grumble.

And I don't think positive is the right reaction (not that anyone would dare to vote for me after last month, so I can post what I like).

*Grumbling fades off into inaudibility as well as incomprehensibility.*
