Re: Discussion September 2011 Writing Challenge

Left it late as ever, and in a bit of a rush, so no time for a proper shortlist and reasons.

Runners-up, HareBrain with Puppeteer and Teresa with Not All Fairytales End Happily. Both excellent pieces.

Vote to TDZ and Unbridled Lust -- I'd quite happily have voted for the title alone which is brilliant!

Many thanks for the various shortlistings, sorry no time to check back and mention you all by name. Big thanks to Bob S. Sr for the vote! (Hmm... if I can attract attention by mentioning voters' names...)

Re: Discussion September 2011 Writing Challenge

Thanks for the mention HB , appreciated as always!

Parson gets my vote for a tale of how far Man can go yet still have his eyes closed.

Re: Discussion September 2011 Writing Challenge

It's been a pleasure as always reading the entries, even if some of the stories, while excellent, didn't seem to fit the available genres or theme. The other - very distinct - possibility is that they've just gone over my head. On the other hand, some of them are open enough to be interpreted as Sci-fi or Fantasy, like Perpetual Man's (or maybe I'm just partial to that story. I can't imagine why :D).

Anyway, I believe a shortlist is in order...

Harebrain - Puppeteer
Anne Martin - They
Aun Doorback - From the Writings of Dr Spandex
Reiver33 - Tracking, with Close-ups
Telford - And Now for Something Completely Different
Mosaix - Everyone Deserves a Holiday
TDZ - Unbridled Lust
Boneman - The Returnee
Stormfeather - Soul Feeders
Cul - An Uncharted Island in the Indian Ocean, c. 1932

And four finalists this month:

Sid Hawkins - The Watchmakers
Chrispenycate -Backstage Eminence
Perpetual Man - Faceless
TJ - I, Robert

I have to be brutally honest here - I was determined not to vote for TJ, simply because she's garnered so many of my votes before! I know that's not how this should work, but I figured it's only fair to spread the votes. Then I figured it's even fairer to just vote for my favourite story, as we all should. So, with a - slightly irritated - sigh...

...I, Robert gets my vote. Just too good.

Re: Discussion September 2011 Writing Challenge

I don't know what you mean by "host the next one." The site hosts the Challenge in the sense that it provides a place for us to do it. There are no prizes for the 75 Word competitions like there are for the quarterly 300 Word Challenge (Brian, the site owner, provides those).

Otherwise, the previous month's winner chooses the theme and starts the thread, and moderators more or less take turns setting up the poll.

So there is nothing to "afford" here except the time to do it, and as I said, some of us divide that up.

Re: Discussion September 2011 Writing Challenge

Sorry Ursa did it in the style of a Eurovision Song Contest Jury (although they use phone voting now)- Azaibaijan the country that won this year the joke was it was the only country that could afford to host it in 2012.

Re: Discussion September 2011 Writing Challenge

Depending on what the winner will choose next month, I have an idea or two for October already....

But that's for next month. I had voted for TE because I best liked the feel of her story.

Re: Discussion September 2011 Writing Challenge

And an incredible thank you to Culhwch for the vote! It's only taken me minutes to get to the voting bit and find it was there, (virgin Broadband is sick today), and it feels great to see it. Very much appreciated, it's made my day.

No worries! Through a number of re-reads last night, your story was the one that I kept returning to... (No pun intended.)

Many thanks to BookStop and mtzGr for the votes, and to all those who mentioned mine i lists both short and long!

I see TDZ has taken a late lead, but it's still a close-run race!

Re: Discussion September 2011 Writing Challenge

Oh, is it now? PM was in the lead for quite a while. I guess I'll have to check the polls again. *Shrugs*

In either case, I'm awaiting Halloween Month's challenge. :D

Re: Discussion September 2011 Writing Challenge

Here cometh the result of my survey

HairBrain: If it goes to court it'll be tricky.
Chel: Anythings better than a womanising letch it seems.
High Eight: And the band played on. - without doubt it'll be chicken.
Telford: Nice play on words.
Mosaix: Nice twist.
Devil's Advocate: It's obvious, when you know the truth.
Boneman: It feels so familiar.
Okuporr: It'll all end soon though.
AnyaKimlin: Had to chuckle.
Hex: Tragic coincidence.
StormFeather: Count me in with the others.
