The Winds of Winter publishing date guesses?

I finished a reread of AFFC last November. My conclusion is that it is a much underrated book. That it took me 4 reads to come that conclusion is puzzling and rather concerning. I have yet to get past a 2nd reading of ADWD. Which is a relief.

Feast and Dance are mid-range-books. Most long novel series get this problem where the middle slows down. It's because maintaining the pace and feel of the opening is near impossible. The world has to pause and readjust before it can build to a climax for the latter part of the series.
Malazan Book of the Fallen managed to be one of the few to avoid this by focusing on select groups of characters per book and changing that group focus with each book as well as the time period - thus it was able to maintain high action pacing basically by jumping around the story and world.

GRRM is in the doldrums of the story where its sorting itself out and then building into the climax; that some find the current last few books a little heavier going and a little less amazing fits that model. And because his series is longer than 3 books its got more chance of being a stretched out phase rather than a very short one.

@viZion The link is right in the post you quoted. Just click on the part "wrote an opinion piece".
Ah, thanks. Even after you pointing it out I could still barely tell the difference in colors between the link and the regular text.

Anyway, interesting opinion. I replied to her post. The basic gist of what I said was that I don't think being "spoiled" by a TV show or movie necessarily ruins enjoyment of the books (and vice versa). I've read plenty of books after seeing the movie specifically because I wanted more details and more involvement in the world despite knowing, basically, what was going to happen. There is so much more to a book than just plot point A, plot point b, etc. I can't wait to watch the show, get some questions answered, and then read the entire story in the next book (if it actually gets finished, that is).

Article offers no real sources and nothing concrete. Just guesses and conjectures based on smoke and mirrors (the part where they claim that sample chapters could be complied into an ebook already is absolute bollocks). Martin had a post a while ago explaining that the book got delayed and that he doesn't know when it will come out so, judging from the general tone of that post ("But there's also a lot still left to write. I am months away still... and that's if the writing goes well."), I really doubt he was that close to finishing it. I'll just wait for him to post or say something before getting my hopes up based on a click-bait article without any concrete facts and almost non-existent reasoning.

Damn you and your logic and research. This post...

Rumour has it the book could be published before the end of the year.......

... had me happier than I even care to admit.

hopes, consider yourselves crushed.

You never know. Smoke without fire and all that. I'm an optimist and like to think positively but even so I'd be surprised if it hit the shelves in 2016

No-one really knows (except GRRM) how much is left to write. It's all conjecture and finger in the air estimates from the likes of us. The update you mention Anushka was around 2nd of January if my ailing memory serves me well, so with George cutting back on his other interests and concentrating on writing like he said then I'd like to think over the past 7 months he'd have moved on considerably. By like I say - all we can do is guess.

So back on topic. Anyone not had a guess yet?.........

I think also he's trying to write more of the following books as well so that whilst there's a big gap now he's more prepared to churn out the rest of the series - or at least avoid the huge plot changes like his removal of his time-jump he was going to put in originally.

I must admit I'm always impressed with an author who publishes such a tight story over so many volumes over so long a period of time. Being unable to make even minor changes to the original publications in light of plot problems they generate later or to even add new characters or themes into earlier books in anticipation of key events/situations to occur in latter publications.

Didn't people say that when GRRM was writing A Feast of Crows - since he was breaking up that part of the timeline over two books, that A Dance with Dragons would be half-finished by the time AFoC was published?

So am I. But what does that have to do with GRRM? ;)

We can all make guesses, but they have to be based on something. What exactly is that article basing its claims on? What exactly makes them think that GRRM is intentionally delaying the publishing? They are just spewing words and sentences without any coherence or cohesion and they made an outlandish claim they cannot support by facts and sources. It is a click-bait to get more views on their website because the series is a hot topic and everyone wants the know when the next book will be rolling in. Nothing more. Perhaps I am too harsh on the topic, but I detest such "journalism".

I made an estimation few years back that it would come out in Spring of 2017. I will still stand by that estimation. XD
