Discussion thread -- 75 WORD WRITING CHALLENGE January 2013

Teresa –There is a lesson to be learned here that could be applied to any time and way of life. It seems that even with the advent of higher technology, people will still want to go out and meet others, but will still try to hide who they are, probably infear that they will not be seen in a favourable light. Unfortunately there are those that will see the truth in a different way.

StilLearning – The trouble with taking all the time and effort in creating a virtual world is that when something is a program one can never fully anticipate what might go wrong. Anything that is made has the chance of glitching. Or being hacked. Viruses or whatever can be such aggressive things. A great story that starts SF and ends horror.

TDZ – Heh, started reading this and was thinking ‘Forget the kids, I want one of these,’ of course as I read on I began to change my mind quickly. And I don’t mean let the kids have it either. A clever story that misdirects perfectly setting the reader up for a conclusion that is as pretty scary in it’s own right. (Hmm, I’ve got a Dalek to check for any technical components ;))

Cul – A genuine fear and a definite warning that is as true now as it ever was, that no matter how great and wonderful new technology might seem there is still a downside, things that sometimes might not become clear until years later. There is a genuine feeling of claustrophobia, being trapped in something that cannot be escaped no matter how you try. Immortality it seems is not all it could be.

Thanks, Perp! :D You shouldn't have to worry about the Dalek -- it's only the 2.0 versions that started going awry.

Thanks for the positive comments guys, appreciate it.:)

Absolutely Paranoid Marvin.

TheDustyZebra - A wonderful toy that can do many fun things to amuse children, but, it can also be a deadly device. Very cool and very creepy tale.

Culhwch - Trapped inside cyber space and avoiding SPAM! Yikes, a freaky yet seemingly dark humoured entry. Great stuff.

Posted (okay on the last day) without reading any of the entries, so I wouldn't be inhibited... I hope my story isn't a clone of anyone else's and if it is, I can only plead great minds think alike, and apologise.

Looking forward to reading them all when the challenge closes. Not looking forward to voting, as usual. Did someone say we had three votes this month, because... erm... ah... its snowing! That deserves three votes, surely?

Ignore him, Luiglin. He knows perfectly well it's one vote, but he tries it on every month! It's like Pavlov and his dogs. Only with more saliva. :p

BM – Well... some literary pretentions here, for a moment I had to check the name and make sure it was not Jane Austin posting ;) The idea of stories changing, being updated for the modern age is not a new one, unfortunately, but the way it is presented here give a feeling of a coldness, a perfect representation of everything that is lost as we become more machine than human.

Parson – A nice look at virtual identities and how they can take control of our lives, almost an addiction. It seems as though there is nothing ‘cyber’ in Thor until we get to the end and realise that it is little more than a online creation, something that seems to become more alluring than real life to the poor user. When you look at the way people are pulled into games these days, perhaps what we are seeing here is the future.

Perpetual Man -- Thanks for the review. As usual you got it in one.

I don't think I've ever posted so close to the deadline before. I really thought that there would not be a parsonic post this go round. I mean... cyberpunk? --- But a germ of an idea came floating in and I wrote and posted in record time. --- Good thing too, I thought I had a day or two left.

I would say ... rofl ... but considering the dog analogy how about ... Rolf ... from the Muppets :D

Woof.

Well, I've only read one cyberpunk novel, which was full of impenetrable jargon and was pretty much incomprehensible. So I think I've done a good job in replicating both aspects in only 75 words. :p

Once again, CJ ... I mean, TJ ... does her "Jackal" for us! Definitely a new side taking over. :D

Darp! I never thought of being incomprehensible.

(Well, more incomprehensible than normal.)
