Discussion thread -- 75 WORD WRITING CHALLENGE January 2013

The Judge for sure. Honorable mention to Hex.

EDIT: To expand on "The Judge for sure"... I have read a pretty nice chunk of Cyberpunk and Judge's piece is at least tied for the best genre writing of the entries because he uses the vocabulary, themes, and tropes as well as anybody. It's not the most original story, but it is a complete and complex story in 75 words so props for that. Finally, it's just well written... it's witty and funny and a really good use of words. All together, head-and-shoulders above the pack.

As to Hex, the premise is interesting and the writing is solid. The cyberpunk elements are a little weak, and I don't see why a person-controlling implant would be in the thigh as opposed to the spine or something, but if Judge hadn't posted such a good piece I would have gone with Hex's.

That was tough! They were all great stories, and even winnowing down my top ten took a while.:)

Honourable mentions to:
reiver33
Aun Doorback
Luiglin
chrispenycate
digs
paranoid marvin
Teresa Edgerton

My top three is mosaix, Aun Doorback, and Cul, with my vote going to mosaix.

I obviously have no experience with Cyberpunk. Funny thing is I actually wrote a story that would have fit the genre perfectly but elected to go with my second story which may not really fit.

But any ways I think I can tell a good story when I read one so here is my Short list

Talysia - Scary thought, but very plausible as well. Well done
Victoria - Beautiful language used, the story was meaningful and almost danced on paper
Mosaix - Interesting, seemed to say a lot with a little
Teresa - I liked the idea, and can imagine the world of Online Dating like that
Parson - I just picture this fat young man defending the world from his moms basement, good stuff

and my Vote Goes to The Judge. It was a really cool story. Flowed perfectly.

Lumbering in with the final comments (These young whipper-snappers make me feel slow!)

Ursa – As always I feel as though I’m miles behind trying to keep up with our master wordplayer. Is it a computer looking out at the man who uses it, or is there something more going on. Of course if it is the computer staring back at it user, the system restore at the end is going to be close to murder – a machine just reaches sentience and then has it taken away in seconds...

TJ – Not only is this a beautifully constructed piece, that rhymes, tells a story and feels organically cybernetic, but it also gives us yet another warning about the dangers of technology. In a bid to save a life, or even improve a life it is sometimes easy to go a little bit too far. Maybe lesser means might have saved him, whereas the high-tec approach meant a final termination.

HB - !!! I’m tempted to say that this entry is pants, but what it really is, is off the wall crazy. A dig at mobile contracts combined with a future where pants are the cybernetically enhanced way forward. It’s mad, harebrained and totally, utterly entertaining.

So, for someone with only one vote, voting through cyberspace, it was just as difficult as usual...

I have very shortlist, and finalists. Each of the finalists could have won (oh for three votes!) but in the end...

Springs
Abernovo
Juliana
Starbeast
Nixie
Phyrebrat
The Judge

I voted for Starbeast: he had the themes down to a T, and then some. Great story. And I'm gobsmacked at how TJ can rap so well...:)

My not so short list, with the two in bold just appealing to me that microscopic bit more.

Hex
BigJ
Alc.
Juliana
Talysia
Aun
Victoria
Stephen
DEO
Luiglin
Hope
Mosaix
Phyrebrat
PM
Teresa
TDZ
Cul
TJ

And my choice by a strand of superfine spider silk is Luiglin

Woof.

Well, I've only read one cyberpunk novel, which was full of impenetrable jargon and was pretty much incomprehensible. So I think I've done a good job in replicating both aspects in only 75 words. :p

Laughing out loud on this one Judge!!! I must say I would agree with the first half of the sentence, but the second half; not so much. I at least was able to penetrate it. ---- "hm, was that rude?"

StarBeast & Victoria Silverwolf thanks for the succinct and pleasant reviews.

Bowler:
As weird as Parson
Have you been spying on me?

Ratsy Thanks so much for the short listing. It was more than I expected on this go around.

Thanks for the mention, Boneman. :)

I loved the almost Dickian entries of mosaix and Starbeast this month. They stood out amongst a strong (as always) field.
I whittled my short list down to three, though.
Hex, with an escape from cyber captivity, the realsiation of a world imagined by Dick and Gibson;
Jane, sorry, Boneman :p, with a book entity protesting modern mores to her dying electronic breath; and
Teresa Edgerton, with her perfectly described tale of cyber(dating)punk in a virtual nightclub.

Any one of these three could have won, but, by a the thinnest whisker, Teresa got my vote.

Thanks for the shortlisting Perpetual Man. :)
I don't think I've read any cyberpunk, so I just had to wing it. This made the shortlisting all the more uplifting. Thanks.

Thank you Boneman and Perp! :)

On holiday at the mo, so not much internet time between beach and pool (its a tough life *sigh*) but will post my vote as soon as I have a quiet moment to reread eveything.
