Discussion thread -- SEVENTY-FIVE WORD WRITING CHALLENGE May 2014

by the way, AnyaKimlin, did you intentionally rhyme your MC with a certain politician here in the UK or was it just a coincidence?

Thanks for the mention.

Entirely intentional. When I read the topic, Alien Invasion, he immediately came to mind. I had just been to a Mark Thomas gig. What I wasn't prepared for was for UKIP to do so well in recent European Elections and make my story quite so topical.

You're welcome. Didn't pick up that reference the first time as the name and tentacles led me straight to the aliens from the Simpsons who were from Rigel 7 (I think). Got it on the second read through though -might have been because he was on the front page of the paper this morning having a victory point.

Thanks for the short-listings, Perp and Mr Orange. :)

My pleasure Ursa

And thank you very much for the shortlisting Johnnyjet!

I forgot, while explaining my vote, to add my wishes and sympathy to Bob Snr., so will do so here. Non illegitium carborundi.

Thank you Bowler, Cat's Cradle, Jonnyjet and Starbeast for the mentions, and enormous thanks to Perp - though the word was 'pulpchritudinous', a deformation one can get away with in poetry, even if it's a bit more difficult to look up in a dictionary (my spellchecker hates me).

Hmm, perhaps a little early to post the list of those who haven't yet voted…

Thank You for the short-listings Starbeast and johnnyjet; both much appreciated!

Thanks for the listing SB!

So here is my list. I liked all of the below in different ways.

Perp
Kylara
Jastius
Culwch

but in the end, Remedy's Mother's Denial gets my vote. Well done everyone.

Why thank you for making me a finalist, Starbeast, good sir!

Absolutely Perpetual Man. Stellar story.

thank you very very much for the finalisting Starbeast, and....

we get to to the 28th to vote right? that's my job for tomorrow i think.

You're very very welcome Mr Orange.

It took me a long time to choose, but I kept drifting back to your tale. So, I voted for your astonishing classic styled sci-fi entry.

Starbeast it feels dead mint to be one of your finalists. Thank you.

You're immensely welcome Ashleyne B. Watts. Keep up the good work.

Thanks Starbeast. Nice to be on your list. :)

You're very welcome Juliana.

And thank you very much Starbeast for including me with your finalists!

You're fantastically welcome The Storyteller.

Thank you for the mentions alchemist and Starbeast!

(The last time I tried to combine humor with science fiction, it was a resounding flop, so I am thrilled that people are actually liking this story.)

You're welcome Teresa Edgerton.

Humor isn't easy, and I know that may sound strange coming from me. Originally, I wasn't intending to use humor in my entry, but after some time of story floating in my mind, I began poking fun at it, and of course we all know how it turned out.

Never try to force the comedy into a short story, because it will take up wordage and you could lose the main idea of your tale. But if it fits well, hey, go with it.

Thanks for the mention, Beasty.

You're very welcome Telford.

I found the decision very, very hard this month.

The actual shortlist:
Victoria,
Juliana,
SB
Chris
Cul
Ursa

Thanks for the mention Perpetula Man. You made my day.

First of all, Bob, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Wow thanks starbeast! Somehow I missed this so was pleasantly surprised when I checked the poll just now!

Thanks again!

ha ha, just planting a seed....

apologies, that should have been thanks very much to the storyteller for the shortlisting of my story

You are very welcome! The mix-up with names gave me a chuckle, seems like something I would do! :D

And thank you johnnyjet for the long listing!

Thanks (6 pgs later) to CC for the mention.
I'm positively crunched for time atm, but will attempt to make an effort at voting.

Most importantly though; Best Wishes Bob! a mutinous body is nothing to sneeze at.

You're welcome Mr Orange.

While biting your nails at the closeness of the poll (oh, who am I kidding? We can all see who's going to win :D ), there's a photo challenge in need of votes. This month's theme: Pairs.

D'oh. I almost forgot again. Thanks for the reminder Alchemist, I'm going there soon.

Oh my. I thought you said you were crushed by an ATM. I was imaging your little cat feet sticking out from underneath an ATM machine.

Whew. I'm glad you're not a squishy cat. ;)

Thank you to Ashleyne B. Watts, Victoria Silverwolf, Stormcrow, Alchemist, crystal haven, martin321 and johnnyjet for mentioning my mad mother. Some of you gave a few lovely comments with your mentions too, thank you so much (I save those with each entry, along with our wonderful reviewers' reviews).

The Storyteller and ratsy, THANK YOU for those votes. I really didn't expect any this month. Completely made my week! :D

My own vote went to Paranoid Marvin for the brilliant and concise poem, the first and last lines are perfect. Rich with classic sci-fi qualities and so refreshing! :)
