Star Trek: Discovery - new series in 2017

Wow, I've been very out of touch with this one: I was led to believe that Discovery would be set roughly half way between TNG and OS. Someone is going to be corrected!

Why does it have to be a prequel series ?

It's after Enterprise and before the original series. So, it's not a prequel series.

It's a prequel to the original series:unsure:

I hope they at least don't use that ship design for Discovery.

It's not a prequel per se but it sure does FEEL like one! I for one am one of those fans who loves the fact that Star Trek is supposed to be about the future. Yet, we've had three movies and now two TV shows that have not moved the show farther into that future! It's like they are afraid to come up with new stuff and they are playing it safe wanting to "fill in the cracks" from Enterprise. I liked Enterprise enough, but no one in their right minds puts it as their favorite in the franchise.

I am going into this with an open mind albeit a mind that is cynically optimistic about the direction this show has taken. However, with soooo many star trek veterans attached to the project, can they really screw this up?

They'll try!! ;)

If they try too hard they'll end up being desperate and worse than a syfy channel remake of the JJ-verse movies. They'll also put CBS All Access in the tank, but it'll be on Netflix once all 13 eps are on CBS ALL Access and all my millennial friends will flock. Star Trek is quite popular on Netflix so it'll have some hope there. But hopefully it's not like any of the original movies Netflix has been putting out that are utter garbage. I think CBS has a better handle on that type of thing. But I'm not going in expecting much. All judgement will be held until the trailer comes out. I hope sometime around Thanksgiving. Christmas at the latest.

They could have made a series with Captain Braxton's Timeship. It would have been Star Trek, but not as we know it!
I find it... interesting.
Fascinating!

They are, I totally agree, however, the original TV series they have been putting out have been quite good. Does that not give some hope?

1. I think that's the problem with Trek-think. Fans think that Star Trek has to be about space! That is not necessarily the case. What are everybody's favorite episodes? They don't necessarily take place in space. In fact, I think one would have a hard time listing all their ST episodes and come up with ones that dealt with actual space travel! Mostly everybody's favorite episodes are the quirky fun ones that didn't have anything to do with space. And most of the time travel episodes would probably be on a lot of people's lists.

With all the extended universe stuff going on these days, there is no reason why Paramount needs to build up their force fields around the franchise. Star Wars is going in brave new directions, and while I have some problems with Star Wars as it currently stands at least they are expanding their mind, or rather allowing stories to be adapted that have been out there for years. That bodes well for the future of Star Wars. Paramount has to follow suit if they want to be taken serious and not just become another popcorn action-flick.

That being said I agree with you. Star Trek can definitely do a time travel series and they would be the ones to get it right! They just don't have the cojones.

2. Netflix has great TV content. Not sure how bold the CBS Access stuff will be since ultimately Netflix doesn't control it.

Okay here's another issue , how does one make a prequel series Like Discovery look more advanced then a TOS which was produced in the 1960's ? Through no fault of it own 50 years have elapsed since the original series, technology has advanced in leaps and bounds. In original series they're still using tapes in their computers and as a recording medium .

You ignore it, and the purists who will grumble and quivel.

It's think too big a problem to really ignore. The Enterprise Episode In a Mirror Darkly drives home this whole issues as does the DS9 episode Trials and Tribblatons.

Interesting that they could do that, but not surprising to me. There have been two shows in London theatres with a holographic Elvis Presley and a holographic Frank Sinatra. There might have been a Michael Jackson too. If they can do that, then just a voice should be relatively easy.

Thanks for the links. Considering your earlier link, might it be confusing having Majel's voice for the computer.
