Star Trek: Discovery - new series in 2017

It's think too big a problem to really ignore. The Enterprise Episode In a Mirror Darkly drives home this whole issues as does the DS9 episode Trials and Tribblatons.
Plenty of other things have been ignored. The warp scale. The interchangeable quadrants/sectors. The nature of the Romulan war. That whole "women can't be captains" bollocks.

My point is the most all of those who watch the series, if it is going to make it all, will only have the most cursory knowledge of the previous shows of --- think about it --- 50 years ago! Almost anyone who was over 30 at the time is now like John Brown's body. If the show is going to go it's going to need the same age cohort that watched the show the first time. ---- It might also be the time to remember that the original Star Trek only lasted a couple of years. It was not the blockbuster TV show that those of us of a certain age and a certain bent seem to remember it being.

I think most can accept changes to the original series; it wasn't a series built around a long term continuity; in fact the idea of long running story lines only started part way through the Next Generation series and it wasn't until DS9 that we really got a strong story based approach from the start.

Original was very much a monster-of-the-week affair with very few long running story lines that interconnected through the series - most of which being relationships between the 3 primary characters.

That said even if many won't recall the older series or might not be fully exposed to it that's no excuse, in my view, to writing that recons large segments of it for no reason other than writers not enthusiastic (or enabled) to take time to produce something in keeping with the core material. Although, again, I'd say the original series is one that can generally be almost ignored for the greater part in many ways; heck barring a handful most of the aliens they encountered are forgotten in most of the lore.

Actually, the show seemed quite popular, at least among the people I and my mom knew. The decision to end it seemed to be more a prejudice against the genre than ratings. Perhaps I'm wrong, but it's always seemed that way to me.

Plus my dad hated it. That made it great!

3 things doomed the original show

1. Low ratings
2. A 10 oclocks Time slot
3. Season 3 and it's rotten scripts.

??

Locally, it showed at 4:30pm. I know, 'cause I had to rush home to see Dark Shadows, followed by TOS!

:)

I thought I read that they put it in the 10 o'clock time slot in season 3:unsure:

Actually, not hiring Fred Freidberger would have been helpful. :)

3 seasons 79 episodes , that how long Trek lasted . :)

Yes. Of course that was 9 Central Time, and I could watch it. My parents were good like that.

If the network had wanted to, they could have given the show a 4th season , Which would have put it over 100 episodes. I think what would have helped is season 3 they should not have hired Fred Friedberger, he was not a that good a producer when it came toe science fiction . What they should have done was either give the executive producer job to either Gene Coon or Robert Justman , at the very least sea on 3 under them would have had better writing at the very least. Or they could brought in Joseph Stephano and Leslie Stevens , thy did the outer limits an they could have done a good season with a reduced budget.

Yep agreed. Instead they allowed Freidberger to destroy it then, years later, handed Space 1999 to him since he did such a bang up job with star trek. He destroyed that franchise as well. Shakes head.

I knew there would be trouble since there was no footage at comic con and/or ST Anniversary.

Delays don't necessarily mean problems. It could mean scheduling issues.
