Star Trek: Discovery - new series in 2017

“Sci-fi is not something that has traditionally done really well on broadcast,” he said. “It’s not impossible, for the future, if somebody figures it out… But historically, a show like ‘Star Trek’ wouldn’t necessarily be a broadcast show, at this point.”

It sounds as though they're giving up on it already.

Agreed. This sounds as if the series has been consigned to the waste basket.
This has been the case (sounding like it wouldn't get off the ground) with nearly every Star Trek series other than Enterprise.

Three cast announcements. Don't know who any of them are but at least the cast is actually you know getting cast:

Jones will portray Lt. Saru, a Starfleet Science Officer and a new alien species to the Star Trek universe
Rapp will play Lt. Stamets, an astromycologist, fungus expert, and Starfleet Science Officer aboard the Starship Discovery

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Casts Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Confirms Michelle Yeoh

Captain An Bo and her ship is the Shenzhou: ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Casts Michelle Yeoh In Captain Role

There is still the lead female captain yet to be cast. Seems interesting enough to have me check in.

It will be an interesting version od star trek whatever happens. For me the question will be who is the "Discovering humanity" figure. And how will the other characters bring out other aspects of humanity for us to analise?

I keep getting the feeling that as an event series this can fundamentally nit be true Trek.

It needs to provoke an inward look aswell as an outward. DS9 keeps coming up in various threads as a weakness and Bashir is often referenced but bashir and self assurance and arrogance became interesting echos of the era we were in. How can 10 episodes of characters cast with at experienced and therefore confirmed character actors and a decent actress in a minir role do this. We need developing actors and developing stroies, story arcs, and humanity to make this Trek.

In fact I've been thinking a lot about Star Trek Discovery and what it could be and what we already know about it.

To me, if i think about Roddenberry's vision there is only one way to go. Much further into the future. I think he'd be appalled at the idea of looking into the errors of the past as laid out and often referenced in Star Trek the original series.

To Roddenberry it was about where we would end up after fighting through these ages of despair and god(or whatever) awfull extremism.

I wish it was the case that we were looking at a united galaxy, aware it had enough room for itself but just sending out expeditions to other galaxies in the desire to seek out new worlds and new civilisation for to increase the knowledge of all alpha quadrant beings.

And that's the problem. It's only so entertaining to do that. The early years of TNG proved that. But it is what star trek is to me. It is why I am who I am. I studied geology, ultimately after fiddling with siesmographs for years I earned a phd. Becuase I loved the idea of exploring and understanding the unkown.

I think Discovery sounds exactly like a show I'd make for tv. But Star trek was a show that TV itself didn't want and had to try twice and even then was looked upon as meaningless.

And yet I write this on my touch screen mobile phone, technologies invented by Star Trek Fans inspired to do so by the show they love.

End Rant.

Personally, I really like Deep Space 9. Been re-watching it on CBS Action (channel 64 on Freeview, at 8pm weekdays) and whilst there are weak spots (sod off, Ferengi), the longer story arcs and moral dilemmas are rather appealing.

Well I was always fond of DS9. It had a saving grace of course. Sisko was Don Quixote crossed with a religious figure. And I always thought if Star Trek as a bit Don Quixote, an age of knights and humanity confirming it's own inherent goodness. It's achievable aswell. But it has to be strived for. The era of Star Trek they are going into with discovery should be left as a past issue. Humanity needs to move beyond this. It's issues in Star Trek should be things we witness. Situations where we have to reflect on current issues but also we should now that we have moved beyond them.

Ajid, in that case, they should set it a few years or decades after DS9. Alpha Quadrant's exhausted from war, Federations's at risk of splitting apart, political polarisation, the centre failing to hold. Fits both the Star Trek world and our own rather well.

I'd definitely watch that!

The Maquis have succeeded in voting to Leave the UFP but cannot decide what that will actually mean. While they are now able to trade with the Cardassians they still want access to UFP markets without free movement of labour. Meanwhile, the Breen are supporting civil wars in planets along their border.

;) Now what was on your mind when you came up with this solid scenario? You couldn't possibly relate that to anything that's happening now.

The original series was often a metaphor for modern day events, although sometimes i.e. A Private Little War it was used a little too bluntly. The Klingons were the Russians and the Romulans were the Chinese. At the time, you could make political, or religious, points in SF that you would never be allowed to make in a mainstream drama. I don't think that is the case any longer, so I think that is why why no longer see it. Having said that, there are political scenarios that repeat themselves throughout history, and which can still be applied to today, which is why Shakespearean themes are reused so frequently.

I would note that every Star Trek series has been met with skepticism and doubt. :)

-just sayin'

I would be most pleased to be wrong about my assumption. You know, kinda like I said that Donald Trump would never be nominated, and when he was that he would never be elected. (Sigh!)

The risk with Star Trek Discovery is the delivery platform. CBS is using the show as a way to sell its streaming service. If subscriptions to that service don't meet expectations, the show probably gets canned.
