DISCUSSION -- January 2016 300-word Writing Challenge (#20)

Thank you, JD! :) I'm really pleased that you liked the story. It all came to me, every line, in one five minute burst...then it was just transcribing.

I really liked your story, too! There was an intense momentum to the pace...and your last line is terrific! We're both in...now we can relax and enjoy the other stories as they roll in. :)

I'm insanely jealous, mine came kicking and screaming over four days, with an earlier version being scrapped. :) Five minutes Pah!

Thanks! I love my words rubbing shoulders with so many brilliant writers, its thrilling company... I love reading all the others, it's so exciting to see what people come up with and how crazy inventive everyone's minds are.

Jo Zebedee - I love, love this line "I raise my knife. His tail will fetch a fortune, it’ll feed us for a year. His eyes meet mine, mute and pleading." It's just pure poetry, perfectly paced, not a wasted syllable.

J D Foster -- This vivid and introspective mood piece also seems to draw in a very subtle way from an ancient myth.

Jo Zebedee -- The author makes use of a powerful style in order to strengthen the impact of this story's emotionally devastating conclusion.

Inca_UK -- An unusually evocative mood of melancholy and despair is created in this tale.

Wonderful stories, folks! I'm really enjoying the entries from the newer members too. War.Earth, I thought your story was terrific! CC

Thanks for the comments Victoria and I'm glad it turned out alright. I haven't participated in one of these challenges before. I did read over it the day before and thought nah I can't do that. But I just decided its not much to write and it will be good practice. I actually really enjoyed doing it, even though it was a depressing piece haha and I'm glad I did.

Jo Zebedee: I must say this was an excellent piece. I really enjoyed it and it was certainly emotional.

Thank you so much. :)

I'm glad you did, too - very nice first entry.

Shyrka - More Sci Fi admin, I love it. Reading this was so much like doing my day job (quality and audit) I couldn't help but smile.

That's what it's all about! I thought it was a great entry - keep it up and you'll only get better, and who knows, maybe some inspiration for something longer will strike when knocking out these little stories.

So far I've had three books out of the entries (Inish Carraig, Waters and the Wild and Galaxy of Flowers) and a plan for a fantasy duology. People ask where I get my inspiration from and I just point them here....

Edit - just to say they all came from my own entries! I haven't yet had the need to nick anyone else's...:D

Indeed, it's great, and so organic. Forced inspiration, one might call it :)

So far I've had two short stories (one published in Kraxon) and my current WIP Man O'War from the Challenges. It's such a safe way to road-test basic ideas.

Thanks man. One of the good things about it is actually finishing a piece. I've yet to actually finish writing a story (other than that) as I tend to just peter out after a bit due to lack of planning, character development etc. That said, I've only just got back into writing after a good few years out and I was just a teen then haha.
