The first time I ever took part in a challenge I was a nervous wreck. It really is a learning process, not so much because of any silliness like 'talent' or 'being good at it' but because the challenges are a very specific writing format (if you think the 300 is tough, have you peeked at the 75-worder?), having to stick within tight word constraints and things like themes.

They are fun, though. Just jump in!

Yeah just give it a shot man. I've just done my first one too. I read over it to begin with and thought there's no way I can do something like that. Then I slept on it and thought, theres nothing to lose and it can only make me a better writer.

Remember, this isn't really a competition; the challenge is you doing something, while the reward is having all these gifted people reading your piece attentively. It's nice to get mentions, nicer to get votes, but the important part is to get your own three hundred - or seventy-five or whatever - words down and appreciated. And vote of course. Which means you're forced to read everybody else's carefully, being their reward.
