Discussion thread -- July 2016 75-word Writing Challenge

It's that time of the month. Sigh. Always a difficult time but this month was murder. Well done everyone.
Finalists: Victoria, Hazel Rah, Parson, Dusty, Her Honor and Alice.
Runner ups: Old man steve, Dave, Mr O, CC, Chrispy and Ajid.
A tough call but Cul stole the show for me.
STOP WRITING SO WELL, WILL YA. ;)

Still Waters Run Deep, @DG Jones – Riddled with (I think) veiled musical references, this dream like piece describes a dreamlike tale of loss and mourning that concludes with hope.

Straight on Past Miliways, @Perpetual Man – With references to a classic sci-fi series, this intriguing take on the universe’s ultimate fate paints a haunting picture of shattered remnants of reality.

The Seed, @BigJ – A survivor from some unknown cataclysm searches the cosmos for a compatible species to host the rebirth of civilisation and, in doing so, sparks the beginning of something familiar.

The Library at the End of the World, @Culhwch – Running from the destruction of their world, a lone survivor, trapped in a great library and surrounded by the restless spirits of the undead, muses that their fate could have been far worse.

Nostalgia, @nixie – The pleas of a child, haunted by horrors of the past that seep from the very fabric of their world, are ignored by adults who believe they know better.

I'm way behind on the reviews, let alone votes. Please stand by.

The Canyon of Smug, @Moonbat – The outlandish morality tale mingles Aesop-esque warnings with quantum metaphysics to produce a cautionary story of how pride cometh before a fall.

The Last Echo of Humanity, @Ajid – By weaving the constraints of the challenge into the story itself, this ‘meta’ tale paints a picture of the destruction of civilisation and a desperate attempt to prevent history from repeating itself.

The Birth of ‘Lectric Lady, @Parson – This madcap origin story is rich with echoes of the golden age of superheroes where outlandish experiments led to special powers and not – as is sadly the case in our reality – certain death.

Best Served Before… @reiver33 – The widow struggles to come to terms with her late husband’s youthful replacement but, unbeknownst to her, her new partner has different agenda – vengeance.

If we shadows have offended… @TheDustyZebra – A figure, wracked with guilt for some unknown crime, hurls themselves on the mercy of the universe. Only when the echoes of their confession can be heard no longer will they finally be free.

Sins of the Fathers, @The Judge – A lone crusader tracks a bloody path through history in a quest to prevent the children of psychopaths and murderers from following in the footsteps of their fathers.

A Scents of Home, @Mad Alice – This disturbing fairy tale asks just how far you would go to recover the memories of your life. Talk about costing an arm and a leg!

Health Care: Being Realistic About Outcomes, @Ursa major – An orphan, raised by androids after the death of their parents, faces an uncertain future. Why would robots know how to repair humans?

Thanks for the review @Shyrka

@Droflet being a Finalist was a thrill!

------

This was another month where I felt that I didn't understand a lot of the stories, and as so often happens, so many of them were DARK!

Shortlist (not so short actually!)

I decided to shortlist:
@Victoria Silverwolf: for reminding of an animist myth
@ThomasG: For making me look up "Echo & the Bunnymen." I thought you were making a name up, but on the off chance you weren't... Wasn't I surprised!
@Old_Man_Steve2016: For discovering a real and frightening torture.
@Pwaa : For writing a story that sounds like an episode of the Twilight Zone.
@chrispenycate: For solid incomprehensibility!
@mosaix: For the prefect Detective
@Moonbat: For letting the punishment fit the crime.
@TheDustyZebra: For an authors view of rejection letters.
@The Judge: For making a noble mass murderer.

I voted for The Judge, because I like stories whose heroes are flawed but still heroic.

A few stories really stood out for me this month.

Shyrka
Victoria Silverwolf
HazelRah
TDZ
TheJudge
Ashleyne

There was little to choose between them but I ultimately gave my vote to HazelRah, partly because it was so lyrical but perhaps also because it reminded me of the Pratchet quote about one's whole life passing ebfore your eyes before you die.
