DISCUSSION -- MAY 2017 75-word Writing Challenge

Mods - I did wonder though, my record of entering the challenges has been perfect since I started on the fifth or sixth challenge - does this count as a miss on the stats? :D

And, still Mods, on the previous mention of mine as losing things, although it has been removed is there a copy of my story floating around in a Chrons vault or prison for wrongdoing somewhere? I'm sure I have it... somewhere

Yes, and yes. I'm afraid that's the same thing that kicked Chrispy off the perfect attendance list. :(

I'll send you your story. It's probably due some time for good behavior. :)

ETA: I've read it again, and there was definitely no good behavior there. It will have to bribe a guard or something.

As usual, I took a rather narrow view of the genre, in that since it was Urban Fantasy I required the town or city, or at least an important aspect of urban life, to be central to the story, not just a peripheral add-on by way of location. Which meant some good stories fell by the wayside, reducing the number of contenders for my shortlist in one fell swoop. And that shortlist is:

nixie -- Peace in our Time
Phyrebrat -- Northbound/Southbound
Robert MacKay -- The Worlds' End
Teresa -- The Fall of Pandaemonium
TDZ -- Of Things Unknown
Vaz -- Weavers
Victoria -- Wrong Way on a Dead End Street

I found it really difficult to choose among these but after tossing a few coins, in the end (ha!) I plumped for Robert's pub (I couldn't resist faerie mien and a publican au fait with apostrophes!) with Vaz's cattle-prodders a close second.

Some getting-there inching-across-the-desert Urbanite thanks for the mentions/shortlistings Lumens, Stable, Talysia, Johnnyjet, Shyrka, Cat's Cradle, Hugh and Phyrebrat and final this-is-it Jackalmen Win thanks for the lovely vote, Cathbad. And I've just seen I've got stealth votes from pyan and Robert, too, which was unexpected -- thanks to you two, too!

Thank you for your kind words in your review, Parson, but I'm ashamed to say your praise of my understanding is misplaced. I won't explain now, but tomorrow when voting is over, I'll go into more detail.

Yep. Sorry. Though Chris P took me to task when I said he'd missed a Challenge. As he pointed out, technically he had entered all of them, but just happened on one occasion to have posted the wrong version which was over word count. ;)

Make sure that bribe is a good one, TDZ. We're all out of Chocolate Fudge Cake and you know how expensive it is buying it by he hundredweight.

Thanks for the mentions johnnyjet & Phyrebrat

Very short of time but its been headless chicken since returning (I am about half way through 1000+ e-mails!) and got distracted by an FA Cup final (well done Gooners!). With deadline approaching I have had a quick re-read and my vote goes to pyan. Very urban, very much fantasy, my home city and The Doctor, what more could I ask?

Back to the grindstone.
Thanks, Peter!

OK. My list was:- Cathbad, LittleStar, Shyrka, Teresa Edgerton, The Judge and TheDustyZebra, finally voting for Shyrka.

With HazelRah, Maieius, reiver33, RJM Corbet and Ursa major who hadn't yet voted when I wrote this, but Ensign Shah, farntfar, HareBrain, HoopyFrood and Wruter all voted without having submitted anything to vote for - many thanks.

And thanks for the mentions Kerrybuchanan, Shyrka, Talysia and Vaz, and more so dannymcg, for the vote (he's newish so hasn't learned yet)

In the end I voted for @Tywin. I was unsure at first because although it was far and away my personal favorite, I didn't know if I should vote on such subjective criteria. I thought the flow was kind of poetic though and the punchline was the kicker. Also, the ability of an artist to make subjective connections with their audience is an important, rather essential, skill.

Those subjective criteria sound great to me! Thanks for the vote!

As we near the end of the time set aside for polling, it's time to present the results of the Ursa jury:

Honourable Mentions:
  • Runaway by TitaniumTi
  • End of the Line by Parson
  • The Captive Returned by Stable
  • A Steamy Tale by Kerrybuchanan

Runners Up:
  • Wrong Way on a Dead End Street by Victoria Silverwolf
  • The Fall of Pandaemonium by Teresa Edgerton
  • Why can't you read the news online like everyone else? by Moonbat

Winner:
  • From Father to Son by HazelRah

And at the last minute (or thereabouts) we arrived at the need for a tie-breaker poll...

...which will be up and running in a few minutes.

Oh, my goodness!

Tremendous thanks to everyone who mentioned my story, and extra cake to Perp, Hoopy, reiver33, johnnyjet and TitaniumTi for the lovely votes! I shall now proceed to hold my breath for three days. I already bite my fingernails, so I don't have any left for the occasion.

Did we get that cake in the staff room? I need chocolate.
