DISCUSSION -- January 2018 300 Word Writing Challenge (#28)

were monitored so closely by HMRC
We do it more closely than that: I logged onto the HMRC website this morning to discover I'd missed the deadline for submitting my self-assessment form... in spite of the email I'd received from them on Tuesday telling me that my submission had been accepted.

The HMRC systems apparently need 72 hours to get things sorted. On getting confirmation from their very helpful helpline that the submission had been accepted and my HMRC "account" was up to date, I was informed that I mey be receiving a letter through the post to tell me that I was late in submitting....

Here at the Chrons, we like to think we're a bit quicker (in opening and closing challenges and polls, and in having access to challenge statistics) than HMRC. And we don't hand out fines for people who don't enter or vote in time... though now I think about it....;):)

Harpo -- The rollicking sense of fun found in this high-spirited comedy conceals what might be its higher purpose. Through the use of surreal concepts, we come to understand what a thin line lies between imagination and reality.

Suzanne Jackson -- Suspense is created at the very start of this tense tale of a desperate attempt at escape. By creating a situation where the exact nature of the menace is unknown, the reader is kept on the edge of her seat.

Mr Orange -- In this droll parody of academics, the use of a bit of doggerel sets the lighthearted tone at the beginning. Retaining the same mood is a cautionary tale about overconfidence.

Teresa Edgerton -- The darkly mythical mood of this tale of crime and punishment aptly conveys its sense of unavoidable fate. By showing the violation and the retribution only obliquely, the author maintains a sense of inevitable karma.

The Judge -- This intimate fantasy portrays the healing power of fiction itself. By relating a fable about the way in which narrative and metaphor can bring a measure of relief, this story serves as its own reason for existing.

Ursa major -- In this imaginative science fiction story the author creates a unique form of alien life. By relating the details of its life cycle, the story piques the reader's interest and makes her wonder what will happen next.

This was very hard to judge, so I just went with those that were memorable and unusual.

Unfortunately, I contributed to the low quantity of stories this month. My penance will be voting in spite of my non-participation and hosting the February 100 Word Anonymous Challenge over in the Workshop. That should properly teach me for the audacity of not entering a story!

Truth be told, I didn't have an idea until yesterday with about 5 hours remaining to enter, and a party for my daughters to celebrate their excellent report cards in between then and the deadline. So, anyway, I should have my vote up in the next day or so, and hope to see everyone in the 100 Word Anonymous Challenge!

Done my three votes. Was gonna give my reasons but Bob Marley's on telly so gotta go!

Look at poll to see who I voted for - It Could Be You! :D

It seems like reading these stories take like 4x times longer to read than the 75 word stories, like how can that be? But anyways I tried to give each entry the thought and time it deserves. Not sure I succeeded, Apologies.
Short list; Visitors: All great escapes come from thinking outside the box. Sooner than later: Warriors still fighting, even after death. Very scary thought. The Menagerie: What do you expect for a nickel? OSHA regulations?
Machine vs Man: Who to root for?
Mettifore: I think I've been to that bar, don't eat the pretzels.
My vote will go to 3 of these. Still hemming and hawin!
ps: To those still keeping your resolutions, don't give up!

Thanks so much for the vote, Calliopenjo!

And I hope you've noticed that you are off to a fast start in the voting - go check it out. :)

Okay, I totally promised myself I wouldn't look (because I'm weird and superstitious like that) but then of course I totally caved and did just that, and I realised that two people have voted for my story! *Squeals in delight and clutches imaginary pearl necklace and/or sniffing salts*

I'm super honoured and flattered, to whomever liked my story! This was my first ever go at a 300 worder, and there were so many fabulous entries, I'm stoked anybody noticed plain ol' cotton. Has made my day! :D

I've been totting 'em up and get 22 votes cast so far.
It looks like someone only used a single instead of using three :(

It still indicates that only eight have voted :)

Plenty of time left

Totally my fault, Sorry

I didn't know we had three being new here and having found out on returning from work, could do nothing about it.
However if you want to add them I did post my four favourites in order before I cast my one vote for Teresa on this thread.
You would need to add one for Perp and one for EPT Henry.

Nah, it's okay, Don't worry about it :)

Will read and vote in the next few days - looking forward to experiencing the wide range of styles, and story ideas.

It's pretty darn cool that we're in the 5th day of voting, and everyone is either leading, or within a vote or two of the lead. (Trying to stay optimistic in this cold, dark Nordic winter.;))

I need to make time myself but with work, a jaw infection and applying for a new job there's been very little available to do it justice

Note that there are still (a few minutes under) ten and a half days to go before the poll closes.

Wow, sorry Luiglin. Well, you've ten days till the voting closes...I hope your jaw is well on the mend by then, and that the job hunt goes very well. Best of luck, CC
