I have to ask, as a fellow antipodean and former mexican, where Gollum gets his books. Do you get them all new (as your bookcase pics suggest) or are there some fave 2nd hand haunts local to you. And is the SFF bookshop in Swanston St still there (can't remember its name), or Minotaur books?

And I guess a further question has to be, after scoring 18 books in two days how the Zarkoff do you find the time to read them?

You're right, I'm buying more quickly than I can read at the moment but today was the last of my big hauls. From now to the end of this year I'll be getting the occasional anthology and ongoing series but not large sized hauls. I've got approx 150- 170 books on my TBR pile, plenty for the remainder of this year! Hence expect more reviews and discussions about books I'm reading rather than any more large scale hauls.

The SFF Shop run by Justin in swanston street was Slow Glass books. Justin closed down but has a shop front now in Northcote, presumably as a result of cheaper rates in that area. Minotaur is where I get the bulk of my books and IMO the best SFF run shop in Australia having been to it's counterparts in WA, Adelaide, Canberra and Sydney.

Cheers....:)

I agree. My local SFF shop in Canberra is kinda lame, though their intentions are good. But I should probably spend more time there to give a more informed opinion. But I have an informed opinion on Minotaur, and it has rocked for many many years.

I'd be interested to know if you have any fave 2nd hand haunts. I only get down there occasssionally and I don't have much time away from the fam so I would like to target the best ones. Sybers I know, and the one run by Syber's husband in Elsternwick.

Cheers... GF...:D

The one I got a good haul from the other day is called The Merchant Of Fairness specialisng in second hand books. They're located in Balwyn, Melbourne. The website is The Merchant of Fairness Home Page and they have a very catchy tune.....:D

Another second hand bookshop which was excellent was McLeod's bookshop in Box Hill. Unfortunately they closed down very recently which is a real shame!!

Another smaller SFF shop in the city is called Of Science and Swords. They're in The Strand, 250 Elizabeth Street. They're only stocking new books but not bad.

There's also an antiquarian bookshop with some beautiful books at the top end of Elizabeth street. Pricey but a real joy just to go in and explore! The kind of place you could easily loose yourself for several hours.

Hope that helps.

GOLLUM ... that's alright. The Cat's done packing. Just remember the cream :p

Have an illustrated Dracula but it's by Hilderbrandt and for some reason although the art is wonderful it feels 'wrong'. Am curious about what your book is like.

The Earthsea Quartet is definitely a must. It's got one of my all time favourite dragons ... Orm Embar. Now that's a name to stand at the door and yell in the middle of the night. ;)

And you've got Sandman .... Enjoy. :)

I ordered these yesterday...

The Forgotten Beasts of Eld by Patricia A. McKillip
Harrowing the Dragon by Patricia A. McKillip
Merlin's Ring by H. Warner Munn
A Midsummer Tempest by Poul Anderson
Mother of Kings by Poul Anderson
Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad

A slightly smaller haul this time...

The Hallowed Hunt - Lois McMaster Bujold.
Baudolino - Umberto Eco.
The Complete Dream Cycle of HP Lovecraft.
Selected Short Stories - Honore de Balzac
Thomas The Rhymer - Ellen Kushner Winner World Fantasy Award
Wizards anthology aka Dark Alchemy *second copy
The Ladies of Grace Adieu and other stories - Susanna Clarke

I went to pick up 1 book and look what happened....

GOLLUM ... So much for a certain someone saying he'd done with book buying .... :p

You got Thomas the Rhymer. That's a lovely, lovely re-telling of an old story. One of my favourites of all the re-tellings in that series.

And more Lovecraft is always a good thing. Have not gotten around tp reading Baudolino of Grace Adieu yet.

Am reading nthologies and graphic novels due to the wonky working hours. Have fun with your haul GOLLUM. :)

I'll second the Cat on Thomas the Rhymer -- that is a lovely, lovely book. And I do like the idea with the Lovecraft collections that bring together the stories that are major contributions to a cycle -- even if it's impossible to get them all in, since so much of his work is interconnected in various ways. Still, it's a very nifty idea, and the cover art on those is quite striking, as well.

I'm also curious to hear what you have to say about the Balzac... would you mind PM'ing me a list of the contents?

Yep I've PM'ed you on that JD....:)

Just purchased....

Paul Coelho (author of alchemist) The Witch Of Portobello and I got a really cool string bag with that purchase!!
Heart Shaped Box - Joe Hill *Horror novel Neil Gaiman's raving about.

Mammoth haul yesterday from the second hand book stalls at our weekly flea market - someone must've been having a clear-out.

Richard Morgan - Altered Carbon
Isaac Asimov - Nemesis
Gregory Benford - Eater

Pretty decent rain today, though. Just what Victoria needs.

I'd be interested to know how you find Stand On Zanzibar. I've been meaning to buy that one for years, but for some reason have never got around to it. Looks like a dense read.

My friend needed to buy some books today, so we went to My Favourite Book Shop once again. And, well, seeing as I was there as well, I had to buy some books. What? Don't look at me like that, I had to!

The Wasp Factory - Iain Banks
Timequake - Kurt Vonnegut

Both excellent in different ways. My advice, Hoopy, don't read Wasp when you have PMS.:p

I just bought Priestess of the White and Last of the Wilds by Trudi Canavan - I read her Black Magician Trilogy and loved it so I thought I may as well see if these books are as good :D

I was proud of myself coming out of a bookshop with only 2 books :p
