I was out and about in town today (have you noticed how I seem to turn every book haul into a mini story? Ah well...) going in and out of charity shops looking for bits to add to a fancy dress costume. And in every shop I invariably checked out the book sections. And in the third shop I suddenly thought to myself: Wouldn't it be strange if I found The Lies of Locke Lamora in one of these shops (because everyone's been raving about it so I've been meaning to buy it) but then I told myself, nah, that's unlikely. One minute later, what do I see? Yep! There it is, for a mere two pounds! Hardback! Woop.

I also bought the Secret Garden for one pound because it's my favourite childhood story.

Another good haul, Hoopy. Once again you showed us your book hunting instinct and talent!:D I have a feeling you are gonna like The Lies of Locke Lamora. Good story, interesting characters and good writing with some humour. Except the writing could have been neater, IMHO.

I'll never learn, will I? I keep telling myself, Hoopy, you've got to stop buying books while at university, you'll never be able to move them all back to the Midlands when you go home!

Oh, I know. I blame GOLLUM. He's making me envious with all his recent book buying. So I feel the need to buy as well :D:p

Anyhoos. Visited my favourite second hand shop today and bought:

Slan - A.E van Vogt.
Friday - Robert A. Heinlein. Which strangely does not have a blurb. I know I pretty much hate blurbs (some are useless, I swear they describe some other story sometimes) but I have come to rely on them when buying new books! So I haven't a clue what it's about...ah well!

Hoopy ... Secret Garden is always a great buy. One of my favourites too. Have fun. :)

GOLLUM ... you've got Dream Hunters :) That's a lovely, lovely book for both the tale and the art and you have to tell me what you thinks happens at the end please.

*Packs bag to move to Australia*

Book Of Skulls - Robert Silverbeg
Lord Of Light - Roger Zelazny

The only one I've not read on there is the Salvatore, so I won't comment on it. But as for the rest -- another great haul. Question: Which version of Stranger did you buy? The original, or the later uncut version? And I'll be quite curious to hear your response to Dying Inside and The Book of Skulls.....

Not sure but it's a later edition. It's the ACE 1987 edition if that's enough information for you?

As for the other books I'll let you know.

That's the original published edition (of which I'm quite fond, I must admit); the uncut version was released in 1991. Any further printings of it that I've seen tend to have an indication of this on the cover. However, it's still debated as to which version is "better".....

No surprise but hey!

The Color of Magic, The Light Fantastic, Equal Rites, Mort, Sourcery, Wyrd Sisters, Pyramids and Guards! Guards!

Yes, though I've only read the uncut when it first came out, so it's been quite a while.... It flows a bit more smoothly, and some of the motivation is clearer; some of the character development is smoother, and there are other differences. But I can see why some parts of it didn't make it into the original edition, considering the period.

Last Saturday I picked up Gateway by Frederik Pohl and Stand on Zanzibar by John Brunner. I saw about 10 books on my to read list, in one shop (Canty's), but wasn't that cashed up. Besides, I still have a few books backlogged.

If ever anyone comes to Canberra you have to check out the 2nd hand book shops in Fyshwick. There's 4 or 5 concentrated within 100 metres, including an SFF bookshop. But the best one is a shop called Canty's. They don't seem to have a website unfortunately.

Today I bought...

The Earthsea Quartet - Ursula Le Guin *A must for any SFF library
Tales From Earthsea - Incl. "bridging novel" Dragonfly - Le Guin
The Other Wind (next Earthsea novel) - Le Guin (World Fantasy Award)
Reave the Just & Other Stories - Stephen Donaldson award winner
The Rediscovery Of Man - Cordwainer Smith
The Minority Report & Other Stories - Philip K. Dick *Never read anything by him yet.
Platinum Pohl - Collected Stories (30) - *Ditto with Pohl
The Jack Vance Treasury (18) - Edited by T. Dowling & J Strahan
The Best Australian SF Writing - A 50 Year Collection *not going to the 'cat'...;)
Nightwings - Robert Silverberg *Hugo Award Winner
Ombria In Shadow - Patricia McKillip *World Fantasy Award Winner
The Haunted House - Charles Dickens

On order....

The Hallowed Hunt Lois McMaster Bujold
The Best in Fantasy and Horror 2005

Nightwings - Robert Silverberg *Hugo Award Winner
Pretty decent read for most part although the ending I thought was this huge copout "Oh everything's nice and sunny for our protagonist" type. If you haven't got them already I more hihly recommend Book of Skulls and Dying Inside, both incredibly poignant and emotionally powerful books.

Got them in my previous book haul and very much looking forward to reading them....:)
