Favourite characters?

Just a note... if you are afraid of a spoiler just write SPOILERS in bold before you write what you percieve to be a spoiler.

N8smitty, you sound like Robert De Nero's character from This Boy's Life. He is of course an abusive father in that particular flick. He tells his kids to shut their pie holes throughout the movie. Is it your intention to abuse everybody who uses this forum? The funny thing about a forum is that it requires a mixed bag of opinions in order for it to continue with purpose. If we simply conceded to your opinion then this place would not be a forum, but a personal Blog of your own design. People will simply stop reading your posts, or taking you seriously. Which would be a shame as you have some pretty valid opinions.

I agree with you about this constant stream of chapters being leaked. We want the book in its entirety, these chapters just insense you further. However, if the chapter was posted then I would not be able to stop myself from reading it.

I gotta stick up for Davos. Someone said he was boring, but I like him. He's loyal, true to his beliefs, and pretty ballsy, too - stealing the kid (I can't remember his name, Robert's ******* - was it Edric Storm?) out from under the Red Woman's nose, risking his own hide being sent to the fire, and then telling the slowly-going-mad Stannis he was fighting the wrong war - without him the Wall would likely have fallen.

But I think Dolorous Edd takes out my absolute favourite. Gotta love that dry wit. I like Arya, too, and Syrio Forrell (sp?) who I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned here. Just so.

I agree with pretty much everything you said, especially about Syrio Forrell. I think hes my favorite non-perspective character (if that makes any sense), just barely beating out the Hound. Really hope Dolorous Edd stays in it too, hes second only to Tyrion in making me laugh.

Also hate to admit it but I tend to agree with that guy who got banned about Timmet, as well as Shaga and the rest. Those guys just cracked me up (with Tyrions help).

Only character I can think of who I dont think has been mentioned is that Dornish Prince who went down against Ser Gregor. Give him major props for taking on the Mountain.

Hear, hear! Prince Oberyn was very cool, although a little bit of a nutcase. It was definitely tragic the way he died, without even knowing whether or not he was able to complete his revenge.
I think that Ser Gregor will live, but I personally hope that he'll be brought down a peg or two by the effects of the poison. Then maybe he'll be more of a match for other fighters.

Just listing some of my favortie charatcers however there may be SPOILERS

Jaquen H'gar is probably me my favorite non-pov character, and Tyrion is defintely my favortie overall character in the series. I also like Garland Tyrell's brief roles as well, I think his interactiosn with Tyrion spoke volumes of him, and no doubt from waht know of his practice habits, and for the fight of Kings Landing he is an astute warrior as well. Loved Littlefinger as well, and Davos.

Just an incredible series all around, I mean Rhaegar is dead in the series yet you can't help but love the character.

To be perfectly honest I doubt it, the Mountain seems like he has a pretty hearty constitution. But if Sandor does come back and does end up taking his brother on, Ser Gregor will go down, though I'm sure it'll be a hell of a fight.

I know this is a bit of a stretch, but how cool would it be if Arya learned more about fighting while across the sea, and disposed of the Mountain when she returned? I'd be grinning from ear to ear. :)

There are numerous incidents that occur up to Sword of Storms that have most people beliveing she will train as a faceleesman (which is what I was referring to in regards to Martin's stellar foreshadowing techniques).

A Feast for Cows SPOILER

This is pretty much accepted as going to happen (in regards to her training)

END SPOILER

Someone made a top ten list on here, and I think I'll do the same:

1.) Sandor Clegane: Number one on my list, you'll see in a short while that I have a tendency to like ambiguous characters (ie, he appears to be a bad guy, but is actually more neutral) and misunderstood characters. Love the character development with the Hound.
2.) Arya: Strong voice in the books, and her chapters have always been interesting reads too.
3.) Sansa: I know a lot of people hate her, but she's the voice of innocence in the books, polar opposite of Arya. Arya is active while Sansa passive (which is why I think people like Arya rather than Sansa). Arya is exposed to the harshness of the world, and adapts to survive. Sansa is exposed to the same harshness (albeit much less so), but in order to survive, she learns to close her eyes to it (there's a passage about that in AGOT, where Joffrey makes her look at her father's head, and Sansa thinks, "He can make me look at it, but he can't make me see it." Seems to summarize Sansa for me), and bravely suffers in silence. Anyway, I like her, so sue me. :p
4.) Dolorous Edd: Best one-liners in the book.
5.) Samwell Tarly: A self-professed coward, yet he shines through in the end. I can really identify with Sam, he's the "everyman" of the series.
6.) Lord Eddard: Ah, I liked him because he was noble, but alas, he had to die.
7.) Tyrion: A complicated character, and still not sure if he's a villain, an anti-hero, or a hero yet.
8.) Theon: Yea...maybe it's because I'm contrary, but I liked Theon. He's still an ass, but he was from two worlds (Starks and Greyjoys), but not accepted by either. I can well understand how he felt at times.
9.) Jaime: Put him in the same category as Tyrion. Interesting character development so far.
10.) Brienne of Tarth: Stubborn and kind of one-dimensional, the fact that she is pretty much a knight says a lot for her staying power and fighting prowess.

you know, i have to say, i love the bannermen for Robb, like the Glovers, and the greatjon, ect...i swear...i had to put the book down and take a breath after the red wedding. :-( but, i like edmure, and the greatjon is chained, but still alive :)

and one more thing while im at it. Did anyone get a chill with stannis' offer to jon. the whole moment where he said, (baically) knell jon snow, and raise jon STARK. the sound of that was pretty nice ;-)

I would have to go with Sandor Clegane. I find the contradiction between his brutality and amorality on the one hand with his obvious vulnerability on the other to be so interesting. The Red Viper of Dorne is also funny as hell, however short-lived his character might have been. Jaime Lannister also has developed nicely, though I have a sinking feeling that he is transforming into something . . . well, maybe not "good" but at least predictable.

Tyrion, Jamie, Sandor, and Arya.

Tyrion, absolutely the best character in the series. Smart, resilient, quick on the uptake, visionary, and able to admit hard truths. He's also humorous.

I think I like these characters because they are misunderstood. And none of them seemsto be able to really make people understand their dilemmas.

Conversely, Robb, Cat, Jon, and Sansa are the absolute worst of all the characters. Thankfully, GRRM spared us Robb's dim witted POV.

Favorite Character

1. Sandor Clegane: Brutally believable, you would HAVE to be tough to survive a brother like his. Ultra-violent, mean, and yet underneath a very vulnerable and emotional man. I believe he is the ONLY man in GRRM's books to cry, but would you call him weak for it?

I agree Duff, one of my favorites too! Certainly not weak!

Some of my other favorites, in no particular order: (forgive any spelling errors :p )
Edd Tollett, Tormund Giantsbane, Roose Bolton, Jaime Lannister, Arya Stark, Daenerys, Petyr Baelish

Ned had to my favorite character until he was shortened by a few inches. Still pissed about Ned's death. Bran is an ok character. Jon is getting to be one of my favorites as is Jamie and the Hound. Arya is one tough lady. Oh forgot to mention Dolorous Edd has great one liners.

-Eddard
-Robb (the young wolf)
-Arya
-Bran
-Jon Snow
-All the direwolves are cool
-Dany
-Robert Baratheon
-Petry Balish is cool

Robb Is Coolest Tho

My first message on the forum :)

Well, absolutlly my favorite character is Tyrion. He's ~plotting plotting~, cool, and I have empathy for him. Although I've no idea where he can go to after ASOS.
After him, I deliberate between Arya and Jaime.
These are my favorites, and except them, I like almost all of the POV's.
At AGOT I pretty hated Sansa, and wanted to hit her every pgae. Since then, she got quite better.
Two things I could never understand about the ASOIAF's fans are their opinions of Dany and Cat.
For some reason, everyone hates Cat. I dont understand why. Her episodes are interesting, because she is near interesting persons like Robb, and we dont see her sobbing that much. And even so, she has good reasons.

(ASOS SPOILER)Its quite funny that the only Stark child who died so far is the one whom Cat was physicly close to him and could protect him..
While reading the book, I've always thought "I'll hate Martin so much if he kills Robb, that will be too cruel of him". And guess what happened.
The red wedding was the saddest thing so far, except Ned's death :(
(END OF SPOILERS)

The second thing I dont understand is why everyone so loves Dany. I just hate her. She is not interesting, she wasnt nice to Mormont, and she is all-the-time-somwhere-far-beyond-the-sea-and-doent-do-anything-interesting. I could have read well enough all the series skipping her episodes without miss a thing. Except the dragons..

Shish, that was long.. :)

Welcome Mort! Good first post.

I respectfully disagree. Mormont was guilty of high treason! The punishment is death... though, many despots usually mix in some torture before executing traitors... Dany's father would not have hesitated to torture and kill Mormont. In my opinion, Dany was too kind to Ser Jorah.
