Casting news from the TV series

Both the production vid and the trailer have got me very excited for TV series (more than I was already). Sean Bean seems to be getting pilloried on all the forums for using the word "playful", though! :D

Back again but not really any news

Not really spoilers but blanked out in case you don't want to know :p

So a scene with a gypsy type wagon rolling into a court yard. Guards making an arch with their spears (not sure if that's the correct term). Two of the young boys (who are main characters) having a conversation while crossing the courtyard. and jamie lancaster going into a brothel.

It would probably have helped if my colleague had actually read the books!

Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister.

An absolute metric ton of images taken from the previews and behind-the-scenes clips.

Some interesting tidbits from the last month and a half or so of shooting:

They are filming out of order, with the first month of shooting concentrating on Episodes 3-5, including the Hand's Tourney scene (which had over 200 extras present) and several meetings of the King's small council. Some additional footage set at the Wall, featuring Jon Snow's integration into the Night's Watch, has also been filmed, along with several scenes involving Daenerys Targaryen and her adventures on the eastern continent.

Contrary to earlier reports, which suggested that only Dany's scenes would be filmed in Malta and everything else in Northern Ireland, there will be a mixture of scenes spread across the two locations. More of Dany's material will be filmed in Northern Ireland (particularly her scenes crossing the Dothraki Sea and in Vaes Dothrak) whilst some of the Maltese locations will stand in for exterior filming of the city of King's Landing.

A great deal of attention is being paid to fine detail. A shot of Grand Maester Pycelle's desk reveals scrolls bearing the names of previous Targaryen kings (even down to the fact that King Aegon IV left off the honorific 'King of the Rhoynar' due to his dislike of the Dornish), whilst King Robert's crown has a stag motif to reflect the Baratheon heraldic symbol. Eddard's small council seat has the symbol of a hand imprinted on it, whilst Petyr 'Littlefinger' Baelish wears a small clasp in the shape of a mockingbird.

Some more casting news from GRRM's blog:

We have a couple new castings to announce. The part of Rickon Stark will be played by ART PARKINSON, a Belfast native son. Rickon will be older than he is in the books, but still the yougest Stark. And MIA SOTIRIOU has been cast as the maegi Mirri Maz Duur. Also, a small change for Elyes Gabel. He will now he playing Rakharo rather than Jhogo. It was felt that Jhogo and Drogo sounded too much alike when spoken aloud, and might cause confusion.

new on Not a Blog. I find it disturbing that Lommy and Hotpie will appear in the first sseason.

Froggy would like to hint around with you madmen some more, but Andy is too damn tired right now. It's less than a week before I fly off to Ireland, and I'm still exhausted from the long trip to Australia... so I will forgo the games this time around and just tell you straight out that David & Dan and HB0 have filled two more roles for GAME OF THRONES.

The part of Hot Pie will be played by a newcomer named BEN HAWKEY. And as Lommy Greenhands, we will have EROS VLAHOS, best known for his role in the "Nanny McPhee" movies.

Hiya, guys, hiya, hiya.

I hear some of the purists pointing out that Lommy and Hot Pie don't actually appear in the first novel. You're not wrong. In the books, they don't appear until the first Arya chapter of A CLASH OF KINGS... but they'll be in season one, looks like.

Other announcements should be coming soon, though it's not likely that I'll be the one making them. I'll be packing or flying to Ireland, and afterwards to Malta. We've very close to naming actors for the roles of Stiv and Ser Meryn Trant, waiting only HBO approval, and Nina and D&D have been looking at Kevan Lannisters as well. Soon, I think...

I'd assume it's at the very end, and we see Arya on the road with Yoren. There couldn't be much more of an overlap...
I was thinking the same thing, but then why even bother putting them in at all?

The series is bound to have a somewhat different structure to that of the novel. For one thing, the viewers seeing it "live" on the TV cannot flick back to remind them of previous events. For another, I don't think sticking to one POV for a long time would work on the screen, whose viewers expect much faster POV shifts.

In this context, recall that Arya's final chapter is quite a way from the end of the book. It may be closer to the end of season one, but perhaps not. If not, the viewer will need to be reminded or Arya's predicament (which would, in any case, be overshadowed by the actions surrounding her father).

By the way, I doubt we'll be seeing much of Hot Pie and Lommy, but just enough to add to tension in the season's finale.

Yeah I think Tyrion is GRRM too. Hmmm, I think that must mean Tyrion will survive the series. Surely you wouldn't kill yourself off? :D

I've always thought the same about GRRM. It becomes obvious when you step back from the fiction and remember that every clever word out of Tyrion's mouth really came out of George's. I suspect he might identify with him as well.

Yeah, while most, if not all of GRRM's POV characters are very well-drawn, I do get the feeling that Tyrion is somehow 'more real' than the others. He seems an incredibly complex character.

I believe GRRM has said several times that he identifies alot with Tyrion and that he's his favourite character. (Mine too!)

A second 'moot' was held in Belfast last night for fans and members of the cast and crew of the TV series. Sadly, I was unable to attend, but lots of reports from people who were there.

A fair few castmembers showed up, including Mark Addy (King Robert) and most of the actors in the Night's Watch. Most were tight-lipped, but it was hinted that the relationship between Renly and Loras will be a little bit more obvious on screen than in the books. Ran from Westeros.org also got a set tour, including being able to sit on the Iron Throne, and will have a thorough report up at some point.
