Casting news from the TV series

I think we'd previously established this thread was for discussion of the actual casting decisions made by HBO, there's another thread for casting suggestions and ideas ;)

Woah! Too much at once! I think Nikolaj Coster-Waldau looks great for Jaime, Tamzin looks okay for Danys but I'm concerned about the vast age difference in looks between Danys and Jorah. Madden and Allen seem great.

Can anyone post photos of Sophie Turner and Maisie Williams?

They're on GRRM's not-a-blog.

HJ, Merchant is 22 and Glen is 48. I'd say there's supposed to be about 20-22 years difference in age between Jorah and Dany.

My concern was finding an actress old enough to play Dany's intimate scenes and yet young enough to look the part.

I'm with Boaz on this. Jorah is supposed to be 30s or 40s and Dany is how old again? 14? There is supposed to be a pretty large age difference in their looks.

And yeah, I actually thought that after I pressed Submit Reply but figured I may as well just keep it up. :p

I love all these castings with the exception of Theon. He doesn't look anything like I pictured of him. Granted that probably isn't the best picture of him. I do like GRRM's glowing praise for him however!

For the record Jorah is in his 40s, explicitly stated in Game of Thrones. I think Ian fits the bill for me. 40s back then I would expect look much older than 40s these days.

I imagined Jorah to be a bit more thick-set though, if truth be told. I'm not unhappy with Iain Glen being cast but he is quite.. Hmmm.. narrow? I took Jorah to be bald, bearded and built like a bull (or perhaps I should say a bear?). No doubt they can shave him and he can grow a beard but he is too slight to be the Joran I always had in my head.

I'm just nitpicking now..

The Old Bear and Jorah are certainly not to be confused with neither the Manderlys nor the Umbers, but I agree that they're not on the thin side.

Alfie Allen is a total Mockney wideboy which is, bizarrely, not a million miles away from what I imagined Theon being like in attitude, although not in looks. But it did occur to me we have quite a few dark-haired, young, good-looking guys in the series, and having a bit of variety in there is a good thing. Alfie is also a good actor, which tends to get overlooked here in Britain due to his celeb sister and girlfriend (he's dating Ray Winstone's daughter), which is the most important thing.

One thing I am voting for now: Keith Allen as Balon Greyjoy. When Allen is actually doing 'serious evil' (rather than the 'comic evil' of Robin Hood, where he was all over the place) he can be a really scary guy. Having Alfie's real dad in those scenes would be awesome.

I like young, dark-haired, and good-looking. I'm all for these casting decisions! I actually can't wait to see Jon's scenes with Ygritte in the caves...never thought I'd say that.

Is to see Jon or a snaggle-toothed unwashed Wildling?

The next big casting roles are: Cersei, the Hound, Melissandre, Stannis, Littlefinger, Davos, Tywin, Barristan, Loras, Renly.

Stannis isn't in the first book, actually neither is Davos or Melissandre. I can't wait to see who's the Hound he's my next important role. Besides Cersei probably though.

Some of you may remember a poster named Tysha. Well here's her rendition of Arya. Compare that to the picture of Maisie Williams. Not exactly the same picture, but I think Tysha's view of Arya and the casting director's are very similar.

Mr. Weirwood, I have the answer. Wink, wink.

As for the Stark girls, taking two newbies to acting to play these roles where:
a) Arya does some serious murdering
b) Sansa is abused and sees some horryfying stuff
Is a big leap of faith. I hope they made the right one but I will give them the benefit of the doubt as I am certainly not a casting manager for such a large ensemble cast.

I'm blushing.

So, those left to cast for the pilot should include:

Will
Waymar Royce
Gared
Maester Luwin
Rodrick Cassel
Jory Cassel
Benjen Stark
Jeyne Poole
Beth Cassel
Bran
Rickon
Hodor
Old Nan
Septa Mordane
Mycah
Gage the Cook
Mikken the Smitty
Lyanna Stark (flashback???)
Rheagar (flashback??)
Cersei
Tommen
Myrcella
The Hound
Boros Blount
Merryn Trent
Khal Drogo
Magister Illyrio
Haggo, Cohollo and Qotho (Drogo's bloodriders)
Irri, Jhiqui and Doreah
The Old Bear
Maester Aemon
Willem Darry (flashback???)

Beyond that, it really depends how far into AGOT the pilot will go.
