The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

Yes, there were gaping holes. It's RTD though. There was no Dobby the House Doctor, the Master didn't cry, although the Doctor did have a hissyfit.

I agree the 5 seconds we see the new chap for weren't great, but who could be in 5 seconds? Happy to reserve judgement until we see him in proper action.

You're probably right - too soon to judge. But first impressions last and I felt it was an incredibly poor first impression. I predict Smith will be the first single-layered Doctor.

'I'm not ginger, am I?'

Far too soon but then I'm biased, I love Matt Smith!

The line was "Still not ginger" ;)

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

In the trailer on the BBC website, Matt Smith is using a very clipped British accent circa 1940's / 1950's. The sort a Doctor in films of that time would use. It really struck me as very different from Tennant's modern twang.

As to the last two programs, well I must be a simple soul I quite enjoyed them, but then when I am full of turkey and gin(christmas day) and a little fragile (after a late new year's eve) I really don't want anything to tax my brain cells with. ;)

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

Still following #drwho on Twitter - I haven't seen so many crying females since Stephen Gately came out.

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

I think I must be of the same simple type as SJAB - I enjoyed both episodes. I found them entertaining and easy to watch.

However, on both days I was/am content with anything that won't tax the brain too much, such as Dr Who, and repeated viewings of the wonderful animated Gruffalo, which my children have insisted on watching at least once every day since it aired.

I am, in some respects only, easily pleased!;)

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

I didn't watch the episode tonight, because I didn't watch the one on Christmas day so it would've been a bit useless, but I did catch the last ten minutes or so just to see how Mr Tennant popped his clogs. Only the moment I turned it on, he was already staggering along.

I actually didn't mind Matt Smith's first little bit. It made me think that I might actually watch some of the episodes when it starts back up again (I haven't watched any episodes since the Easter one because that just put me off). It almost seemed like he'd still a little bit of tenth doctor in him, which might diffuse by the time he's crashed landed in the next episode. Unless the new personality kicks in immediately. I don't know these Time Lordly ways.

What was the Four Knocks things about, then?

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

Having watched pt 1 for the third playing at the lunchtime repeat, then the final half, I think I thought the second half was better. Yes, some gaping holes (though I thought the Time Lords being sucked back into the Time War / time-lock was fairly well implied; the fall and Donna's cop-out were a bit bigger for me), but some of the bits were excellent. More twists than I expected from RTD, too: the Time Lords reversing the Master's handywork, rather than the Doctor, Donna not being the obvious "saviour" from anything at all, the switcheroo on the four-knocks (RTD gets a nod from me for that) and even the half-angered (albeit inevitable) going into the cabinet. As for the "reward" sequence, it's certainly indulgent by RTD from his entire spell in charge. Who wasn't there? A bit cantina-ish for the Cpt Jack bit (how many episode references did you spot there, btw?) but mostly bearable.

All in all, a good ending. And, (manly cough) not a dry eye in this house...

A big old Darren Brown misdirection trick. More details were in Confidential, but I thought it worked very well.

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

But what happened? What did it end up referring to? The four knocks thing has been bouncing around for so long now, that's the only bit I want to know about!

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

My daughter said "I don't like him!" I just wondered how many times people have said that before only to eventually prefer the new version, but I think Tennant (and Eccleston) is a hard act to follow.

Everything was far too convenient; the way the Master and the Time Lords were put back in their box (time-locked bubble) again. I somehow already knew that would happen though, so not very disappointed.

It was Wilf who knocked four times on the cubicle door - but Wilf knew all about the four knocking thing - so that didn't make much sense.

"The Doctor's just turned up at my place as well, I just told him to piss off and hurry up and die"
"Return of the King had fewer endings"
Very funny and very true!

One thing not explained was the possessed Seer/Prophet Woman Time Lord who turned out to be the same one who had been stalking Wilf. When Wilf asked who she was, the Doctor turned and looked at Donna but didn't actually answer him. What was that all about? Is it Donna? Is it because they just like playing mind-games?

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

It took me and my little guy (the only other dr who fan in teh house) two seasons to like Tennent. I also do NOT like the new doctor. He doesnt even look like a doctor, he looks like a lead singer of a punk rock band and he has on way too much mascara.

I liked Ecclestein and the afro haired doctor whose name I can never remember (I want to say bell, but I know thats not right) and the super old guy that reminded me of Spock's father whose name I also do not remember. He was in black and white tho I think.

In any case, I also don't get why all the doctors are male. And I would like an Italian doctor this time around, please. Or at least a good Native American one. Mix it up a bit people!!!!!

OK, s'alright, Wikipedia is finally up to date! I know it now.

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

I preferred the second part to the first and, apart from RTDs self-pleasuring, Tennant's ending wasn't as much a huge, explosive send-off that I was expecting (half of me dreaded that we'd be given something similar to the finale of the last series).

Bits were daft (as above, I'm dubious about his fall), but some bits were kind of alright. I don't think I can add much, having come late to the party, but I do want to say that I liked the look of the bar Jack was in (more aliens than you can shake a stick at, and some there that I'm sure haven't been seen yet!).

On the subject of #11, he seems to be a bit crazy. Much more reckless than Tennant at any rate. Time will tell.

Well as Donna is Wilf's granddaughter would that imply the woman was a grown up Susan?

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

Another thing, that line in the last episode about the Doctor having to wipe out the Time Lords to stop them really ticked me off. The Doctor was trying to wipe out the Daleks, the Timelords were collateral damage - thats what made the Doctors actions all the more terrible.

re: The End of Time (pts 1&2): Final DT episodes

Interesting that Dalton's character was named as Rassilon. I agree with the point above that whilst the Time Lords have often been bad, it's rather changing the whole story of the Time War to paint them as complete super villains.

However, it was said that letting Gallifrey survive would also let the daleks survive (which they obviously have anyway).

Am I the only hoping they eventually properly bring back the Time Lords? A few could've escaped, surely?

That's something that I meant to mention. That's why I turned over just to see the end, because I was expected some big, dramatic send-off for Mr Tennant. But I suppose they were going for more drawn out, emotional one. We all knew he was off anyway, so might as well make it a big thing.

So, seeing as he says "I don't want to go," (unless that was Tennant suddenly changing his mind!) means that he must get attached to some of his personalities. I suppose he's had a lot of fun in this particular body

Have faith in the Grand Moff. :D

Of course, RTD's self-indulgence weakened the whole emotional effect, as far as I could tell. He just had to pat himself on the back with the bar-full of his aliens, let alone all the rest of the supposed tear-jerkiness. Well, I suppose his target audience was weeping liberally into their alcopops. The transition was okay, but I have to wonder if the new kid's going to bring something new to the part. His first lines were extremely reminiscent of Tennant's.

As for the other loop-holes and unexplained bits, I note that RTD is doing a lot of explaining on the blog. Pity he never put it in the script :D
