Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Better late than never...

01010000 01100001 01110010 01110011 01101111 01101110 00001101 00001010 (Parson) – A bit of consternation from this one, as I enjoyed it, but felt as though I was missing something. I like the feeling though of some things being outside a robots understanding, and the fact that it is recycled instead of being destroyed outright.

01100100 01101001 01100111 01110011 00001101 00001010 (digs)- Something almost human in a machine that is just fulfilling a purpose. It’s quite a clever tale, something that is both cold and isolated and warm and touching at the same time.

01010100 01001010 (TJ) – Quite a brilliantly grim piece this one. It really gets across the idea of a robot being little more than a machine subject to the whims and commands of those that created it. But, there is also the sense of apprehension in that there might be something there that is more than just a machine and that at some point, remembering all that has been done to it might come home. Remember to be nice to the washing machine from now on.

01000111 01100001 01110010 01111001 00100000 (Gary) – What could have been a lot of fun, two robots kicking the daylights out of one another, instead pulled on the heartstrings. Seen from the perspective of the loser it gives the impression that there might be a bit more going on than just a machine being torn apart.

01010101 01110010 01110011 01100001 00100000 (Ursa) – As always a very clever one from Ursa. It seemed to be almost mechanical in presentation. Decisive sentences that were short and to the point, the world and a role in it, through machine eyes. The final line said to me so much, something that encapsulated everything a robot is.

01000100 01100101 01110110 01101001 01101100 10010010 01110011 00100000 01000001 01100100 01110110 01101111 01100011 01100001 01110100 01100101 00100000 (Devil’s Advocate) – What is it with these robots, eh? Seems that so many of them are out to wipe poor old humanity from the face of the world. Well it gives fun stories for one and conveys a warning too I guess. (Definitely be nice to the washing machine) Well presented with a harsh logic and cold but terminal end.

01000011 01110101 01101100 00100000 (Cul) – I didn’t know where this was going, which is always fun, but the last few words gave a great punch to the story and set up a nice what if feeling, or even a why hadn’t he included those words. Would it make the creation better or worse. Great mix of Golem mythology with robots.

Thanks, TDZ, for the mention.

Hmmm... I don't remember naming my profile quite like that... But thanks for the mention, 00100000 01010000 01100101 01110010 01110000 01100101 01110100 01110101 01100001 01101100 00100000 01001101 01100001 01101110!

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Mercy me! I've got a vote!!! Yahooooo! Thanks Alchemist! Give that man a cookie! Summon the musicians and the tumblers and the dancing bear!

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

I've been excessively harsh with my decision this month, possibly because I feel the quality is just sooo good that it's virtually impossible to see a story that is not excellent.

When I went through them I tried to feel see which ones actually met my definition of what 'A Robot's Tale' should be..

So honourable mentions to: Teresa, Christian Nash, Chris, Reiver33 Chel, telford, TDZ, Ursa and Cul.

The final shortlist: Karn, Brev, Nixie Moonbat Leisha, Stormfeather, Anne Martin

My choice, the one that ticked all my boxes: The Judge

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Loved the two Robot/baby tales (Leisha and digs), loved Ursa's and Bev's, but finally had to go for Moonbat's stark offering.

Many thanks J Riff for the vote; I really wasn't expecting any this month (and had the ready-made excuse that everyone was terrified by what I might ask for if, by any evil malchance, I should ever win again).

They've arrived! The bear's amazing! Thanks, green.

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Because I'm so pushed for time at the moment, I re-read everyone's twice and then drew up a very short list, and voted from there.

Very short list:

Highlander
Southron Sword
Greenkidx
Brev
Harebrain
Chrispenycate
Perpetual man
TDZ
Digs

In the end Brev's story drew me in time and again, and it got my vote.

And thank you all for the short-listing and the mentions. I wasn't sure I'd get an entry in this month, so to get attention from such good company is excellent! And to get a vote is even better - many thanks Southron!!:)

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Thanks for the mentions, Perp and Chris. :):)

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

:D <- see that, that's me.

Thanks to Boneman and Telford for the Votes, wow, unexpected...and thanks for all the mentions, really appreciated.

Reading in the glare of my enormous smile I have narrowed my short list to....

Moonbat, Perpetual Man, TEiN, Anne Martin and Culhwch. Gems all, and a tough call.....(insert several re-reads and some head scratching)

.....vote goes to Anne.

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

OMG, first Perp tips me on his short list, and now a vote from Brev. I feel like I've won the lottery. I'm honoured. Thanks!

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Thanks Boneman for the short listing. :) That's 2 on short lists and a separate vote -

Woohoo!! :D

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Hey, thanks for the votes and mentions. That kinda blows my mind.

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Kinda off topic and a bit late now but I just woke up from a nap and was hit with inspiration for another story staring my vacuum and kitties. LOL

I was thinking that a robot would be recycled in such a way that it would lose its very being. But I understand where you are coming from and you point out a weakness in my story I hadn't thought about. thanks!

I would not say it was a weakness Parson, rather a greater depth allowing for a different interpretation of the words. It makes it that much more real, different people seeing things in different way and all.

While I'm here I really should thank Boneman, Brev, MstrTal and Highlander for the mentions.

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

More than welcome Perpetual Man.

You know to be honest I need to add one more name to my short list and an apology to boot.

I should rightly of added Highlander as well to my shortlist.

It was a great story and the only reason I didn't mention it before was sheer contrariness and a personal pet peeve. I have grown a bit curmudgeonly about the fact that children's toys seem to do their playing for them what with the lights, sounds, special effects and what have you. It seems to me that it takes away from their imagination and that they no longer actually play! At least that is the observation between my children and my memories of self.

So I humbly apologize and wish to add you to the list of people deserving a mention for a great story written. Sorry for being childish.

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

So after much consideration, here's my shortlist:

The Lonesome Death of Spirit the Mars Rover by Moonbat
Robot Genesis by Perpetual Man
Purification by alchemist
ITs function is to destroy by southron sword
Why Robot. by Boneman
Revenge is a dish best served with hot silicon chips. by telford

Shortening the list further, we are left with:

The Lonesome Death of Spirit the Mars Rover by Moonbat
Robot Genesis by Perpetual Man
ITs function is to destroy by southron sword
Why Robot. by Boneman

Eventually, we boil down to a slugfest between:

Robot Genesis by Perpetual Man
and
Why Robot. by Boneman

And the winner is... I'm not sure. I need to think about some more...

Is that cockney rhyming slang? In which case I definitely want to read that story...

And a short, short listing.... an amazing way to end a very tough day. Thanks DA!
