Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Thanks from me to Devils Advocate. Not only is it always great to get short listed, but to be up against Boneman is an honour in itself.

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Hey, don't thank me, Boneman! Thank... er...

Okay. Yeah. Go ahead and thank me, then. And due almost entirely to the expression of gratitude, I've decided to give my vote to...

Why Robot. by Boneman!

Yup. I'm that easy. So those of you who want an extra vote next time around, you know what to do...

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

You know to be honest I need to add one more name to my short list and an apology to boot.

I should rightly of added Highlander as well...

Thank you MstrTal for adding my tale to your short list - no apology necessary.

I can see where you are coming from but I would reply that children's imagination knows no bounds. Once the "gadget" has done all its bells and whistles, it becomes something else. My wife noticed this a lot as she was a childminder (various kids from 2-14 years old). I would say their imagination is actually expanded with more sophisticated toys giving them more ideas in their play. However, I know with my own son, when he was very young, sometimes played longer with the box the toy came in than with the toy itself! ;)

PC and PS3 games for instance look mindless  sometimes but they encourage and develop excellent hand-eye coordination. Other games such as Lara Croft are steeped in historic facts which subliminally are imparted throughout the game.

My own story was a ;ogical progression to a machine becoming a personal friend and confidante, like Lassie (who can ever forget "Lassie Come Home!") who was always faithful and inseparable from a youngster growing up. I tried to convey that in my tale but possibly needed more words....:(

Off the soap-box now! Used too many words here now...

Anyway, thanks once more for your thumbs up! :D

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

My, ahem, shortlist as defined by a variety of different reasons, such as the core idea, the expression of the writing, emotional or intellectual accomplishment, and even plain ol' intuition that tells me while I might not understand some of the entries, I still feel there's something real good happening there (I think they're in order of posting):

Teresa Edgarton - FOR FEAR OF LITTLE MEN
Slack - War Stories
Chrispenycate - Go stick your head in a pig
Moonbat - The Lonesome Death of Spirit the Mars Rover
Alchemist - Purification
Sapheron - Frighteningly Possible?
Bedlamite - Little Acorns
Greenkidx - The Robot-Boy's Tale
TEIN - A New Beginning
HoopyFrood - Lo, for Dummies
Leisha - The Progress of Science
Harebrain - Mongolian Death Robot
Boneman - Why Robot
Telford - Revenge is a dish best served with hot silicon chips
RSliwinski - "NEEDS MORE NITROGEN"
TDZ - Deus Ex Machina
Stormfeather - My Lament
Parson - The Report and Termination of X3BC14455
The Judge - The Plantery Tales - Retribution
Culhwch - Golem

I could pick out a handful for my main contenders, but I feel oddly sure about my choice this month and in a strange twist of events, last place finishes first.

My vote will be going to Cul's most excellent Golem.

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Now that's a 'shortlist'. Wouldn't it have been easier, No One, to just list those stories you didn't like? :p (Like mine, apparently...)

Thanks from me to Devils Advocate. Not only is it always great to get short listed, but to be up against Boneman is an honour in itself.

Ah... see, I didn't notice this post before I let myself get bribed by Boneman's gratitude. Don't worry, it has been duly noted. You shall have a leg up on other contestants when the next comp roles around.

(Although a cheque wouldn't hurt, either.)

It's quite okay DA, Boneman deserves the vote. He's doing me a big favour anyway...

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Me favorites...

Moonbat - The Lonesome Death of Spirit the Mars Rover
Perpertual Man - Robot Genesis
Harebrain - Mongolian Death Robot
Boneman - Why Robot
Stormfeather - My Lament
Culhwch - Golem

With final vote going to Boneman.

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Thankee for the mention SP, greatly appreciated.

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Whew! that was hard.
Firstly I'd like to thank all those who have had me on their shortlists, shorter lists or even voted for me. Thanks :)

Secondly, well, it had taken me longer than usual to figure out who to vote for.
My short list (with shorter list in bold)

The Spurring Platty – The library of Alexandria
Paranoid Marvin – Robot messiah
Highlander – Johnny’s Friend
Brev – One day at the factory
Starbeast – death program
Perpetual man – robot genesis
Alchemist – purification
Bedlamite – little acorns
Liesha – the progress of science
Harebrain – Mongolian death robot
Boneman – why robot
TDZ – Deus ex machina
Anne Martin – Decommissioning
Digs – proxy
Culhwch – golem

In third place was The Dusty Zebra with a very clever tale that made me smile

Second goes to Bedlamite, with a brilliant little tale of robot revolution, I thought the acorn/tree theme was very good.
But the winner was always going to be Digs, with a truly emotionally compelling tale, I don't think it has to be a futuristic intensive care machine (except maybe for the conscious thought) as it represents what those machines do presently to help little babies survive. You just can't get a more emotional tale than that, and beautifully done.

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Thanks, Moonbat! And belated thanks also to alchemist, Boneman, No One and digs for the heartwarming mentions!

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Thanks from me too, Moonbat for the short list mention. :D

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Like a lemming, I shall also thank Moonbat (and No-one, Highlander and Devil's Advocate).

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

No short list this month, as there was always going to be one winner as far as I was concerned - and my vote went to Moonbat, with a story that smacked me between the eyes for pathos, believability, and downright excellent writing.

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Close run thing this one, because nothing thrust out a terminatoresque arm and grabbed me at the first view. I did really enjoy HareBrain's entry just for the sheer imagry of it. However, Sapheron's gets my vote as it reminds me of the Nietzsche quote 'When you look into an abyss, the abyss also looks into you'. Thanks Sap - Great entry!

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Perp Man,
You are indeed a kind soul, giving pleasant reviews no matter what. Thank you very much. If I were to write a review about my story it would probably say, " it was easy to read in the bold type"
Bob

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Very(VERY) honorable mentions from me for Perpetual,Stormfeather, Boneman and Liesha. But my vote went to...

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Many thanks to the kindly souls for the mentions. Within this rarified writing environment it is indeed most humbling. Ta.

Re: Discussion July 75 Word Writing Challenge

Had to go with Digs - it stuck with me.

Thank you for the mentions, those who mentioned me - I'm a bit pressed for time atm, so no shortlist I'm afraid.
