Discussion - 300 Word Challenge #12

jastius -- In the all-too-real world in which we find ourselves, sometimes the power of myth can sustain us.

The Judge -- Artistic inspiration is a mystery, at which we can only wonder.

Ursa major -- Self-interest, perhaps more cynically called greed, is a great motivating force; but when interests conflict, not everyone can benefit.

Abernovo -- The unending need to explore the unknown leads us to find many wonders, and many hazards.

Fitzchiv -- Desperate situations lead people to desperate measures, which sometimes pay off.

And the votes:

"The Price of Victory" by BigJ for its theme; profound and important.

"Night Fears" by Glen for its characterization; subtle and convincing.

"Birth of a Monster" by The Judge for its plot; clever and original.

Of course, all three stories were also very well-written and had many other virtues also.

Victoria Silvewolf and Starbeast; my thanks for your kindness and tireless efforts with such lovely reviews. It's so great to get such quick observations on our stories :) pH

You're welcome Phyrebrat. I haven't that quick this time around, I kept getting called away, but I try to get them all on time.

Thank you for the lovely review Starbeast. :)

You are very welcome SleepyDormouse.

Thanks for the reviews, Victoria and SB. Excellent as always.

You're welcome Alchemist.

Yes, many thanks for the reviews, both Victoria and SB. Why can't I write the stories to match the reviews they get.

You're welcome Chrispenycate. I hope perhaps in the future, you yourself would review the story challenges. I enjoy your spicy wordage.

(part five)

Rafellin - It can be easily said that no one likes bosses or job performance reviews at a place of work. But to speak in their favor, they do have to be sure (and keep) the employees doing the work properly. That's why I enjoy this story, it shows us a great example of unhappy employees, in the extreme. Nice to meet you.

David Evil Overlord - Yikes! The nightmare of nightmares, an evil super villain in charge of the media. For me, this is a great tale that has a hint of reality in it. But, this is a great fictional offering, and I like the idea of a machine that can make heroes, or villains. Very cool.

Teresa Edgerton - I'm enchanted with this fractured fairy tale that is an awesome twist on the classic story of Snow White. I thouroughly enjoyed reading this wonderful retelling which really throttles us at the end with a very Alfred Hitchcockian finish.

Glen - Another superhero story, YES! An absolutely marvelous dramatic comic book tale, that displays superbly that a hero can only do so much to help people and the world. I love how even someone who has great power, does take great measures to be responsible, and can also recognise their limitations, and feel helpless in a modernizing world.

AMB - Outstanding story about a woman who tries her hardest to do her job, plus comes up with efficient solutions and wins the heart of the one she has been in love with. A great tale of triumph and tragedy, enriched with sadness and irony at the same time. Nicely done.

Brev - People say, "Matches are made in Heaven". But in a modern world, people are sometimes brought together by machines that place them together. This is a very delightful romantic science fiction tale that I found very pleasnt and enjoyable to read. Good stuff.

TheDustyZebra - Alright, a detective story! (I nearly did one myself) I was excited to read this most unusual pulp paperback novel-styled treat, and was not disappointed. I was thrilled at the idea of a thought machine used to extract information, and startled at the strange, but chillingly cool ending. Jo E. Morrel, nice touch.

The Spurring Platty - A tale from the deep frigid waters that reaches up like tentacles, grabs hold of you, and squishes you to the bone with astonishing depth. I love the Lovcaftian flavor you added to your well written weird sci-fi fantasy story of creamy creepy goodness. Monstrously fantastic.

Jastius - Truely a wonderful tale that fills the reader with fantastic imagery of incredible events that echo the ancient past of legend and folklore. A tremendous story which unfolds into a romantic and extraordinary finish. Well done.

The Judge - Frankenstein, a name that is known around the world, from a story about a doctor who reanimated a dead man, that was made with body parts of corpses. Plus, made into many movie versions, all inspired by the genius of writer, Mary Shelley. And you showcased her in your own outstanding way. Ghoulishly awesome.

Ursa Major - Stellar story about one disgruntled employee who wants to muck-up the works, secretly, to vent his angry and hostility for the awful and sad treatment of his fellow work mates. I enjoyed how you began this treat with a mystery, then you cue us in as to what is really going on. Good stuff.

Abernovo - I love a spooky space exploration tale on unknown planets, and what is alive there. Who knows what creeping, crawling or (as in this story) floating fate that awaits to greet the individual who lands upon the seemingly peaceful world. Great atmospheric eeriness abounds in this weird science fiction offering. Excellent.

Fitzchiv - Desperate men in prison will do anything to be free, be it the cost of someone else's life, or their own. Stark drama and intense sequences lead up to a shocking and unexpected finish. Nice to meet you, and keep up the good work.

You are immensely welcome Jastius.

Out of curiosity, and I think it's a safe topic of discussion, but if not, PM me instead, is there any particular reason you say that? :)

The middle initial "E" combined with the last name "Morrel", sounded to me like the word "Immoral". Originally I thought it was intentional, but now I see it is accidental. No worries.

Thanks Victoria Silverwolf and Starbeast for the reviews and kind words.
And thanks again to Victoria for a vote! Wow. I'm stoked.

Oh! Some of my best things in stories happen by accident. I shall have to think about that one. :) I'll tell you more when it's all over.

My shortlist:

Remedy - a lovely idea, nicely told
Martin 321 - cracking first couple of lines
Mosaix - expertly told
Sleepy Dormouse - liked the end
Fitzchivralry - fab idea, chilling
Harebrain - I snorted with laughter
Phyrebrat - I thought this was just lovely and if I'd had a fourth vote...
Alchemist - summing up the local political scene beautifully, I thought
Brev - I do like a nice romance

And the winners were:

Mosaix, Harebrain and Brev. Now, if Aber agrees you're on the podium. :D (except we rarely agree....)

Thanks for the mini-reviews, Victoria and Starbeast. :)

And many thanks to DEO for the vote. :):)

yay! a vote! happy happy happy! thanks ever so much david evil overlord :D...(bounces around like a kangaroo.. got a vote)

The first reason I don't review challenges is the regulation laid down at their inception by Thumper's mother (actually I think it was Teresa) "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."

That's irrelevant, you say; but no it has bristles and four tusks, it's a masterdon't.

Firstly, I'm not a very nice person. An adept of the red pen, a pointer out of unconsidered trifles. Look at my crits (not that there've been many recently). I practically never add the encouraging 'liked that line' comments, all 'that's wrong, I didn't understand that, that could be done better, leaving the leavening to those with hearts rather than intellects hard-wired to spleens.

Secondly I'm verbose, long winded; the seventy-five word challenge is a great exercise for me. And, since brevity is the soul of wit, that defines me as a half-wit, or at best soulless. Reviewing something in more words than the original would seem a peculiarly politician's talent.

Thirdly, I'm slow. I analyse, I contemplate. The wave of last-minute submissions would get their (yes, I know 'wave' is singular; but this is made up of wavicles, infinitely subdivided) commentaries shortly after the vote, a singularly useless exercise, as the verdict is already in the urns. And this sloth (something warm has warmth, so something slow… and this, in keeping with the theme of prehistoric mammals, is a giant fine-ground sloth compares ill with Victoria's instantaneous comebacks.

And finally, every month bring one or two submissions about which I can think of nothing positive to say. If one post were quietly ignored the author would (quite accurately) perceive this as an insult. Not good.

Due to a complete lack of foresight, I completely failed to properly plan my entry for this challenge, ended up hideously over word count and couldn't edit it down in time :(

But I enjoyed reading the stories submitted and have cast my three votes :)

First honourable mentions to:

Juliana ~ Dead Silence
Starbeast ~ One City Swinger's Gothic Night
mosaix ~ A Man Walked Into A Bar
Perpetual Man ~ The Spanner in the Works
Phyrebrat ~ The world goes out with a pfffff
Teresa Edgerton ~ EBONY, OAK AND IRON
TheDustyZebra ~ Ghost in the Machine
Abernovo ~ Becoming

But my three votes went to:

fitzchivalry ~ Fate Smiles
BigJ ~ The Price of Victory
HareBrain ~ TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE AUSTRALIA DAY

Well done all for the tales :)

Thanks Springs. Didn't realise voting had commenced, so that was a pleasant surprise.

Thanks also to Victoria and Starbeast for their ever kind reviews.

Thanks for the review, Starbeast. :)

Oh-key Doh-key.

Thanks for the mini-reviews, Victoria and Starbeast. :)

You're welcome Ursa Major.

Well, forgot to enter dangnabbit... was struggling anyway, so wouldn't have been a very good entry. Will vote though, god they're good!!

Hmm, I can understand that. Thanks for the reply. I suppose if you did review, it may go something like this...
