Discussion Thread -- 300 Word Challenge #13

Thank you for your review SB. It really made me feel that I'd achieved what I set out to do.:):):)

TTi

You're welcome TitaniumTi. You certainly achieved your goal with me.

Many thanks for the comments Victoria and SB, your kind words are greatly appreciated.

Absolutely Perpetual Man. I'm glad you were able to join us.

Thanks, Starbeast. My poor frizzled person - monstrous indeed... ;) :D

You're monstrously welcome Springs. Keep up the horrific work.

Thank you Starbeast, lovely review. :)

You're very welcome Juliana.

Thanks, Victoria & Starbeast, for your great comments! Especially considering I didn't know how well it was going to work.

You're welcome Johnnyjet. Keep em' flying.

Thanks, Victoria and Starbeast. :)

You're welcome David Evil Overlord. Good stuff.

Thanks a lot Starbeast, glad you enjoyed

You're immensely welcome Ratsy.

Hellhound puppies? Werewolf puppies?

The horror, the horror. I could only imagine what would be unleashed from the minds of our fellow writers. But, hey, I'd like it too.

I'm setting the killer kittens on you.

LOL. You're cracking me up.

Be happy to post it here once the voting's done on the wonderful stories that folks have written. And for those interested, I'll put up both, the first one which was under count and the one that I edited, or maybe revised is a better word, after posting that the cut and paste word count failed to count accurately.

I'm looking forward to see both versions. Have a fun day A. Fare Wells.

Thanks to Victoria and SB for their kind words.

Time's been tight this month, but the weekend is almost here, and I'm looking forward to finding a few minutes to read through the entries.

Bowler1 -- Through the use of effective characterization, this dark and violent tale reveals the unconquerable human spirit in the face of adversity.

StiLearning -- Making use of telling details in a seemingly ordinary setting, the author creates a chilling story in the tradition of Lovecraft.

Can someone please help me? I'm hungry, cold and very thirsty.
The kittens have me trapped and I can't get out.

Luckily... I still have Internet. Thank you Victoria.

You're welcome Brev. Beware, there's some mighty freaky stories posted.

(part two)

Bowler1 - "Royal Justice" I've noticed that it's always the quite ones that can come up with some very shocking horror, that even a horror fan like myself can get creeped-out. Oh man, you wrote an excruciatingly gruesome tale that made me gasp. Well done sir.

StilLearning - "A Scottish night" The freaky terror fest just keeps on coming, with bizarre nightmarish creatures that can make a man scream. I salute you with your Lovecraftian offering (yes, I'm a huge H.P.L. fan), which sent tingles up my spine. Marvelously mythos.

Thank you, Victoria and an Egad! Thank you, Starbeast.

So I have a question about this... I have never written something for one of these challenges before, and I'm not certain I quite understand! I read the rules and some of the entries to try and get a feel for it, but I'm worried that the piece I wrote might not have enough 'plot'. Is there a place where I can post it to find out if it is okay to submit for the challenge? (Could I post it on this thread?) Or any specific requirements of what qualifies in terms of plot/story and what wouldn't? I definitely don't feel my story has a resolved ending, but from what I read it seems like lots of them are left with the feeling that more will happen...? Or perhaps I am just interpreting them wrong. Anywho, I don't want to submit something if it is not following the rules, so I thought I'd ask!

Thanks. :)

Hiya. :) you can't put it up for feedback before the end of voting, but if you're unsure if it's suitable/in the wordcount etc you can send it to a mod for advice. There're no specific guidelines for the story but it should tell a whole story.

If you have a read through this thread:

http://www.sffchronicles.co.uk/forum/534118-improving-our-300-word-stories-read-first-post.html

These are older stories, posted after the comp, where feedback was asked for. It might help?

Thank you Starbeast. Quite??? My entry is grim ok, even for an ex-Stephen King fan like myself.

For Storyteller, all I can say is give it a go.

You're welcome Rafellin.

I expect nothing less...

I was stunned.

You're monstrously welcome Bowler1. I meant "quiet". Oh this darn typo demon that possesses my fingers. Argh. You'd think I could handle two reviews without an incident, but noooooooo, the "Mr Hyde" curled up inside me wants to have fun, at my expense. Argh....:(

Yes, what springs said, about looking at the "Improving" thread and such. You might also have a look at the winning stories from the past in the "Roll of Honor" thread.

And don't worry about it -- most of the best stories of this size leave the feeling that more will happen. Hardly anyone ever tells a complete, packaged story of this size. What you want to shoot for is something happening in your story, more than just a scrap of conversation or a "snapshot". It's far harder to accomplish that in the 75 than the 300, but it's the goal for both.

However, there is no rule that says you have to post a certain kind of story, and it's up to the individual interpretation for the voting, so what works for one person may not work for another, anyway. Just check and double-check and triple-check (BY HAND) your word count, and give it a shot!

Thank you Springs. I ended up scrapping the idea (for this particular challenge, at any rate) because it feels more like an introduction than a full story. I did another that actually does tell a full story, but my word is it hard to do it in 300 words! I started with close to 1000 and whittled away at it trying to bring it down; I just hope enough of the idea remained that it makes sense and doesn't just look like Swiss cheese! :p

Also, I haven't read all of the entries so far but I particularly like Victoria Silverwolf's and David Evil Overlord's gave me a chuckle. :) Looks like a lot of awesome stories, I'm impressed!
